Top 4 Reasons for Gay Couples to Explore Asia

We are a gay couple, Stefan and Sebastien, and we have been traveling in Asia for nearly 2 years. Despite the fact that Asia may not be the most gay-friendly region globally, with many countries criminalizing homosexuality, it is still a place where gay couples can find joy in exploring diverse cultures. Thus, the question arises: Should gay couples travel to Asia? Absolutely, and here’s why.

Why Gay Couples Should Travel to Asia

Initially, we were hesitant about traveling in Asia. However, we quickly realized that gay couples should consider this region—not solely for its breathtaking beauty but for the positive influence we can have on local LGBT communities.

Here’s our 4 reasons why we think gay couples should travel to Asia.

1. It is just as safe for gay couples as it is for straight

While visiting countries like Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and India, we were aware that being gay is legally punishable. Nevertheless, as foreigners, we encountered minimal issues. In fact, during our entire journey, we never felt threatened for our sexual orientation.

In more serious cases, local police occasionally exploit anti-gay laws for bribery. For instance, at a gay club in Delhi, the police intervened at 1 a.m., seeking bribes from the club’s promoters while allowing guests to exit discreetly.

Tourism plays a vital role in these economies, leading to different treatment of foreigners as opposed to locals, despite existing oppressive LGBT laws.

2. There are many fun gay places to visit

While Thailand remains largely conservative, it provides an incredibly inclusive atmosphere for gay tourists. Cities like Bangkok host vibrant gay scenes. Similarly, Bali’s international tourist presence fosters a relaxed attitude towards the gay community, especially in places like Seminyak.

Taiwan ranks high among gay-friendly destinations; Taipei Pride is celebrated as Asia’s largest pride event. Japan’s gay scene is also impressive, with Tokyo featuring hundreds of small gay bars, particularly in the Ni-Chome area of Shinjuku.

The Philippines, known for its warm hospitality, welcomes gay travelers, with Boracay island offering romantic beach experiences, complete with Rainbow Packages for couples.

3. Asia is slowly waking up to gay unions

Although gay marriage remains illegal across Asia, there are small yet meaningful strides toward acceptance, particularly in Japan and Taiwan, where civil unions are gradually gaining recognition.

In Taiwan, the recent election of a supportive female leader has fostered optimism, signaling progress towards equal marriage rights and gay tourism. While many countries in Asia lag behind in marriage equality, positive developments in others hint at a growing commitment to the gay honeymoon market.

Thailand initiated the drafting of a Civil Partnership Act in 2012, but political instability stalled its progress. In Vietnam, recent legislation permits gay marriages, albeit without legal recognition, representing a significant step toward acceptance.

4. Supporting and inspiring the local LGBT communities

This reason is crucial for why gay couples should travel to Asia. While some people argue against visiting countries with discriminatory laws, we believe that engaging with and supporting local LGBT businesses can make a genuine difference.

By spending money at LGBT-friendly establishments, we help these businesses thrive in an often challenging environment. Moreover, befriending locals within the LGBT community can be far more impactful than outright boycotting.

Our presence alone can offer encouragement and inspiration for local activists striving for equality. When checking into hotels as a same-sex couple, we inadvertently educate the staff about the normalcy of gay relationships, fostering understanding and acceptance.

Reflect on this: if you were in their situation, would you prefer your gay friends abroad to ignore your community or come to support it? We’d choose the latter without hesitation.

So go on and start planning your trip to Delhi, Bangkok, or Colombo!
