Dirt Biking the Ganaraska Forest

Dirt biking is often perceived as an activity solely for young thrill-seekers; however, our recent experience in Peterborough, Ontario with Trail Tours proved otherwise. As relatively new riders, we sought guidance to enhance our motorcycle skills before an exciting trip circumnavigating Lake Superior.

Dirt Biking Ontario

Meeting the owner, Steve Weycamp, in a parking lot by the highway, we followed him into the lush Ganaraska Forest. This region is renowned for its sprawling dirt biking trails, comprising hundreds of kilometers where Trail Tours operates.

Trail Tours is equipped with trailers and containers filled with Honda motorcycles and essential dirt biking gear, making it an ideal spot for training and exploration.

Dirt Biking Gear

After gearing up with the right safety equipment, including shoulder and chest armor, knee pads, heavy-duty bike boots, and helmets, we embarked on our dirt biking course with instructor Al. Those with prior riding experience could bypass the basics, instead opting to maneuver around the dirt course to adapt to the bikes.

Transitioning from street motorcycles to dirt bikes requires a shift in technique:

  • Utilize the back brake more frequently compared to the front brake on road bikes.
  • Leaning in the opposite direction while taking turns is crucial on dirt bikes.
  • Maintain a forward position with elbows raised.
  • Standing is often necessary for balance during rides.
  • Use your foot for balance in tight corners—unlike road biking.

The morning was filled with practice, developing skills in a safe environment. We gained confidence with each turn and skid, reveling in the unique freedom dirt biking offers.

Hitting the Trails of the Ganaraska Forest

After a delicious catered lunch, we suited up and ventured into the trails. Initially intimidated by the narrow single tracks, we learned to control our speed and avoid potential accidents. This challenge mirrored mountain biking, but without the exhausting climbs.

Eventually, we joined more experienced riders in the expansive Ganaraska Forest, the largest dirt biking trail area on the East Coast of North America, covering 6,000 acres of dedicated trails.

Our guide, Allan, introduced us to various trails, including a thrilling stretch of bumps known as loop dee loops, where we quickly learned to find our rhythm.

Dirt Bike Safety

Dirt biking is one of the safer forms of motorcycle riding. Contrary to the stereotype that dirt bikers are reckless, riding in the controlled environment of the trails minimizes risks. With no traffic and prudent speed, accidents are rare.

During our adventure, I had a minor mishap with a patch of soft sand, which resulted in a harmless tumble. Thankfully, falling onto soft dirt led to no injuries, allowing me to continue riding and enjoying the thrill.

This experience proved that whether a seasoned rider or a beginner, the training provided by Trail Tours equips every participant with the necessary skills to confidently tackle the trails.
