Discover the Galapagos: Cruise Expedition with Quito and Cloud Forest Highlights

About the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are a haven for an astonishing variety of endemic species. From the famous giant tortoises to playful sea lions and colorful blue-footed boobies, the islands offer a glimpse of animals unique to these enchanted lands. It is incredible to see these species thriving in their stark landscapes and isolated conditions.

Notably, the Galapagos marine iguana is the only iguana worldwide that feeds underwater. Moreover, Galapagos penguins hold the distinction of being the northern hemisphere’s only penguin species. From finches to mockingbirds, visitors will find every living thing captivating. The wildlife here played a crucial role in inspiring Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, and his legacy is woven throughout the islands, from Giant Tortoise sanctuaries to museums.

Galapagos Cruise Itinerary – In Darwin’s Footsteps

Our six-day Galapagos cruise took us through several eastern islands, allowing us to go snorkeling, sea kayaking, hiking, and Zodiac cruising—all in search of marine life such as sea turtles, sharks, and sea lions. This journey was luxurious, adventurous, and enlightening, making it a dream come true.

Exploring Quito

Many travelers fly into Quito, Ecuador, en route to the Galapagos Islands. Once often overlooked, it has recently gained recognition as a vibrant city worth exploring. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, Quito features an untouched cultural and historic center, making it the best-preserved old city in Latin America.

Visitors can easily explore Quito in a day, as its old city is walkable. Key historical sites include the Presidential Palace at Independence Square and the Basilica del Voto Nacional, the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas.

Quito, the world’s highest capital at 2850 meters, boasts stunning natural beauty, surrounded by 14 volcanoes. Additionally, the city is a renowned destination for authentic Ecuadorian food.

Pre-Tour in Quito – Cotopaxi Volcano

Many expeditions commence in Quito. A popular pre-trip includes visits to Machu Picchu or Lima, Peru. For us, a memorable day trip to nearby Cotopaxi Volcano showcased the region’s natural splendor. Within a short drive from the capital, Cotopaxi National Park is home to one of the globe’s highest active volcanoes.

Wildlife Encounters

Day 1 – Fly to Baltra Island

Our Galapagos adventure kicked off with an early morning flight from Quito. The Galapagos, a remote archipelago, is about 1,369 km from the South American mainland, making the journey feel like a voyage for early explorers.

Upon landing, we were warmly greeted by Hurtigruten staff and welcomed by resident land iguanas, setting the tone for our enchanted island exploration.

Mosquera Island – Hike on the Beach

Our first afternoon featured a panga ride exploring the sea cliffs of Mosquera Island, where we spotted frigate birds, blue-footed boobies, and pelicans along rocky shores. After disembarking on a pristine white sand beach, we encountered sea lions in their natural habitat, witnessing nature’s wonders firsthand.

Day 2 – San Cristobal – Puerto Baquerizo Moreno

No Galapagos trip is complete without snorkeling. Our expedition cruise provided numerous opportunities to explore the underwater world. Snorkeling equipment was fully supplied, ensuring an adventurous day as we swam amongst the unique marine life.

The day’s highlight included a visit to the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center, where we learned about these majestic creatures, essential to Galapagos biodiversity.

Cultural Experiences

Despite comprising mostly national parks, about 3% of the Galapagos Islands are home to residents and businesses. We enjoyed a stop at a local distillery, providing an enriching cultural immersion. This segment of our journey was a delightful surprise, as we engaged with locals and learned about their traditions.

Ending in the Cloud Forest

Our Ecuador adventure culminated in the cloud forest at Mashpi Lodge, one of the world’s premier luxury eco-lodges. Set in the Chocó Andean rainforest, this intimate lodge allowed us to experience Ecuador’s rich biodiversity through guided explorations, culminating in an unforgettable journey.
