Explore the Scenic French Riviera Train Journey to Charming Mountain Villages and Trails

The Train des Merveilles, or “train of wonders,” is indeed a marvel. This scheduled rail route transports you between Nice and Tende, a medieval village nestled 2,600 feet above sea level in the breathtaking Mercantour National Park. This experience is not just a journey but an exploration of the stunning landscapes and cultural gems of the French Riviera.

Riding the Train of Wonders

This journey unveils spectacular views at every turn. As you depart from Nice-Ville station, the train follows the Roya and Bévéra valleys toward the Italian border. Depending on your interests, this adventure can span easy day trips or extensive weeklong explorations into one of the most picturesque regions in France.

From June to September, the 9:08 a.m. train features a guide who provides insights about the mesmerizing structures and the engineering feats behind this remarkable route. Construction began as early as 1883, with service commencing in 1928. Delight in crossing numerous bridges, viaducts, and tunnels carved from solid rock.

During the ride, you’ll be captivated by the views, described perfectly by a fellow passenger: “I don’t know where to look,” and indeed, the landscape begs for your attention in every direction. The train’s route presents a visual feast of rocky peaks and verdant valleys that seem to go on forever.

Where to Stop Along the Way

The Train des Merveilles route features six picturesque villages along the Nice-Tende line. Each village offers unique attractions, from charming cobblestone streets to cultural landmarks, making it challenging to visit them all in a single day.

I chose to travel directly to Tende and gradually make my way back to Nice, stopping for an overnight stay in La Brigue. The train was not overly crowded during my mid-week journey, but it’s advisable to anticipate busier periods during peak travel months.

Tende is not only the journey’s destination; it opens up a world of adventure for hikers and history enthusiasts. Mercantour National Park, home to rare flora and fauna alongside thousands of ancient rock carvings, is a true highlight. Adventurous travelers can indulge in hiking, biking, or guided tours well into the park’s depths.

Travel and Ticket Tips

The Train des Merveilles operates five times a day and is managed by SNCF, France’s national railway company. While it’s convenient to hop on and off at various points, be mindful that tickets are valid for a single journey on one date.

Tickets are around €15 each way, but there are better options available, such as the Pass Touristique, which allows for all-day travel within the department for just €16 for the first traveler.

While there are no assigned seats, the best views can be enjoyed from window seats. Additionally, you may bring your own snacks and beverages onboard, enhancing your travel experience as you enjoy the stunning scenery.

For an authentic start to your journey, visit local bakeries like Paul, located just outside Nice-Ville station, offering a delightful selection of pastries and coffee to fuel your adventure.

Timeliness is crucial; trains are typically punctual, yet it’s prudent to check schedules ahead of time as changes may occur. Enjoy discovering the beauty and wonders that await with the Train des Merveilles!
