Having resided in Edinburgh for several years, it easily ranks among my preferred cities in the UK for numerous reasons—it is exceptionally picturesque, rich in history, steeped in remarkable traditions, and characterized by amiable residents. These attributes contribute to its status as one of the most frequented cities in the UK, second only to London.
What could be more enjoyable than exploring an extraordinary city? Experiencing that city without incurring any costs, and consequently, here is a guide on how to spend 24 hours in Edinburgh without spending a penny!

1.) 09:00 Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is located at Inverleith, approximately one mile north of the city center. The Gardens captivates visitors with its horticultural excellence and global reputation.
Spanning over 70 acres of meticulously landscaped grounds, it provides a serene retreat just a short distance from the vibrant city center.
Enjoy a leisurely walk through Edinburgh’s exquisite botanical gardens and take in the sights, sounds, and fragrances throughout the seasonal changes. Admission to the Gardens is complimentary; however, access to the Glasshouses and certain exhibitions incurs an entry fee.
2.) 11:00 National Galleries of Scotland
The Mound, EH2 2EL
After a tranquil morning in the Gardens, proceed back into town through the picturesque village of Stockbridge before arriving at The Mound, home to the National Galleries of Scotland complex.
This complex consists of the Royal Scottish Academy building and the National Gallery of Scotland, which both feature magnificent neo-classical architecture designed by William Henry Playfair. It hosts remarkable works by renowned masters such as Titian, Da Vinci, Raphael, and Vermeer, along with other eminent artists like Monet, Degas, Constable, Turner, and Cezanne.
Best of all, admission is free (though there may be a nominal charge for special exhibitions)! The NGS encompasses three additional buildings: the Dean Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art in the West End, and the National Portrait Gallery located on Queen Street.
3.) 14:30 National Museum of Scotland
Chambers Street, EH1 1JF
Situated close to the Galleries on The Mound, the National Museum of Scotland features a collection that celebrates the culture, history, and people of the nation. Visitors can explore ancient Egypt, construct a plane, and uncover the mysteries surrounding the Lewis Chessmen. And this is merely the beginning!
This museum offers an excellent opportunity to discover Scottish history from prehistoric times through to the contemporary period, and the panoramic views of Edinburgh from the roof garden are breathtaking.
Admission is free although certain featured exhibitions may charge an entry fee.
4.) 16:30 Explore a Hidden Garden on the Royal Mile
The Royal Mile, Edinburgh
Escape the lively atmosphere and noise of The Royal Mile, and venture down one of its many closes, which are hidden in plain sight, to discover a secluded haven.
An exemplary site is Dunbar’s Close Garden, situated adjacent to The Canongate Kirk. Stroll down Dunbar’s Close to reveal a garden designed in the seventeenth century, donated to the City of Edinburgh by the Mushroom Trust in 1978 and named after writer David Dunbar, who owned tenements on either side of this close in 1773.
5.) 17:30 Views from Edinburgh Castle
Castlehill, EH1 2NG
Edinburgh Castle, Scotland’s premier visitor attraction, is perched atop Castle Rock, an extinct volcano, and offers breathtaking views of the city. Although admission to the Castle is not complimentary, the panoramic views available from the Castle Esplanade are entirely free and exceptional.
6.) 18:00 Visit Greyfriars Bobby

After exploring the many hidden closes along the Royal Mile, proceed down George IV Bridge where you will find a small statue honoring one of Edinburgh’s most beloved residents—a Skye terrier named Greyfriars Bobby.
Made famous through numerous publications and a Disney film, Bobby remained vigil by his owner’s grave in the nearby Greyfriars Kirkyard for a period of fourteen years.
7.) 19:00 The Grassmarket
Grassmarket, EH1 2JR
After greeting Greyfriars Bobby, proceed to the historic core of the city—The Grassmarket.
With a vibrant selection of pubs and bars in the vicinity, you are assured of receiving a warm Scottish welcome.
Initially a marketplace for horses and cattle from the 14th century until the early 19th century, the Grassmarket is also notable for its history of public executions and is undeniably a must-visit during any trip to Edinburgh.
