The captivating beauty of Lake Annecy (Lac d’Annecy in French) is well-known. Renowned as Europe’s cleanest lake, it has been a treasured spot since the medieval era, captivating artists, royalty, and travelers alike. Known for its picturesque old town, Annecy is also a delightful escape for those living in Paris and surrounding regions, sought after for its natural beauty and close-knit communities.

As we arrived at Annecy in March to undertake the 42km (26 miles) Tour du Lac, we were uncertain whether our 12-year-old would manage the challenge. However, parenting often calls for leading by example. Thankfully, this cycling adventure is accessible to those without extensive athletic prowess, making it an ideal family activity.

Step 1: Choose the Right Time

Best Months: April to June and September

To ensure a successful family cycling experience, it’s crucial to check the weather forecast. Avoiding windy or rainy days will enhance your outing. Spring, early summer, and September typically provide warm weather while avoiding the tourist rush of July and August. Opting for weekdays also helps bypass the weekend crowds.

Step 2: Rent the Right Bike

Consider classic road bikes or e-bikes

During our journey from Geneva to Annecy, we debated the merits of traditional versus electric bikes. The recent surge in e-bike rentals in France has indeed transformed the cycling landscape. When renting, it’s essential to have matching bikes within your group to prevent any one member from lagging behind.

Annecy boasts several bike rental outlets, making it easy to find a suitable ride. Rentals vary by price and type, typically ranging from €9 to €24 for standard bikes and €16 to €52 for e-bikes. Remember to ask for helpful items like bike locks and baskets if not provided.

Step 3: Pack Essentials

Light Packing is Key

Don’t forget your ID for rentals! Other essentials include a refillable water bottle, snacks, swim gear, a towel, and sun protection. Weather-appropriate clothing is vital, especially during windy conditions. Although a detailed map isn’t necessary due to clear signage, consider having a navigation app on hand for added convenience.

Stock up on provisions at the local market before starting your adventure. Delicious local fruits, fresh baguettes, cheese, and air-dried sausages can make for a delightful picnic along the route.

Step 4: Begin Your Adventure Clockwise

Avoid Steep Climbs for Flatter Paths

Starting in Annecy, most cyclists head east towards Veyrier-du-Lac to enjoy a thrilling descent before tackling the gentle western shoreline. Cycling in a clockwise direction not only allows for a manageable pacing but also ensures that the less challenging sections come towards the end of your journey when fatigue sets in.

The majority of the loop offers designated cycling paths, making it an excellent choice for families. Initially, the path runs closely to a busy road; however, as you progress, the surroundings calm down, offering scenic views of the natural beauty that characterizes Lake Annecy.

Step 5: Plan for Leisurely Stops

Refuel and Relax

Designate time in your schedule for enjoyable breaks throughout the ride. With swimming opportunities and various quaint beaches along the way, you can make your outing more memorable. Bring swimsuits and towels to take advantage of the inviting waters.

If I Could Do It Again…

…it would still be with classic bikes, especially since our adventure was filled with joy without any mishaps or reliance on e-bikes. For an even smoother experience during peak season, consider starting in Duingt to avoid long rental lines and hefty crowds.
