2. What Will I See?
The best way to explore the United Nations Headquarters is by joining a guided tour. These approximately one-hour tours operate Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:45 pm. The tours commence in the General Assembly building, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the organization, including a visit to the General Assembly Hall, which is the largest room of the United Nations, with a seating capacity exceeding 1,800 people. Here, representatives from all 193 Member States convene to address critical international issues.
During your tour, you’ll also visit the Security Council Chamber, the Trusteeship Council Chamber, and the Economic and Social Council Chamber. Please note that access to some rooms may be restricted if meetings are underway. Throughout the tour, participants will gain insight into the history, structure, and scope of the United Nations’ significant work, tackling global topics such as human rights, peace and security, and disarmament.
For families, there is a kid-friendly Children’s Tour designed for children aged 5 to 12. Parents or guardians must accompany all children on this special tour, which should be purchased in advance.
3. What Is the History?
The United Nations Headquarters complex was finalized in 1952 in New York City. The land was graciously donated by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The complex features chambers for the Security Council and General Assembly and offices for the Secretary-General and other international civil servants. Notably, an extensive refurbishment of the complex occurred in 2015, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
4. Where Is It Located?
The United Nations Headquarters is situated fronting the East River on 1st Avenue, between East 42nd and East 48th Streets. The main entrance for visitors is at 46th Street and 1st Avenue. All visitors are required to obtain a security pass prior to entering the complex, which can be acquired at the check-in office located at 801 1st Avenue (corner of 45th Street).

Guided tours are exclusively available on weekdays; however, the UN Visitors Lobby, featuring exhibits, and the UN Visitor Center welcomes guests on weekends (excluding January and February). It’s advisable to secure tickets for the guided tours online ahead of time, as only a limited number may be available for purchase on-site on the day of the visit. Additionally, children under 5 years old are not permitted on the tours. To ensure a smooth experience, plan to arrive at least one hour prior to your scheduled tour for security screening. On-site, you can find a Visitors Café that serves food and beverages, including coffee.
