On my way from visiting family in Bologna, en route to a work trip in Cairo, I did what any sensible person would do with a free day in Europe: I stopped in Rome.

The Perfect Time to Visit Rome

By fall, the city is relieved of its summer swelter, as well as the impenetrable swarms of high-season tourists. Evenings are cool enough to wear a sweater. The city breathes again, and the energy is electrifying.

Breakfast and a selfie

I usually start the day in Rome with…

A long walk around the neighborhood where I am staying. I want to know if there is a supermarket where I can buy bottled water and a few peaches. Ultimately, my goal is to choose where I will have my cappuccino and sweet croissant rolls in the coming days.

A warm baking scent drifts out of Forno Monteforte onto via del Pellegrino, just off Campo de’ Fiori. The bakery is a world of sweet wonders, and I soaked up my coffee with a thick slice of pistachio bread.

House-made pasta at Osteria da Fortunata

In Rome, you must eat…

Pasta all’Amatriciana. This dish reigns supreme among Roman sauces, made with tomatoes, olive oil, pecorino cheese, and guanciale (thick bacon) from the pig’s cheeks. Its surprisingly complex and rich flavor profile makes it a must-try, especially when paired with thicker pasta, such as the house-made scialatielli pasta at Osteria da Fortunata.

Saint Matthew and the Angel by Caravaggio on display in San Luigi dei Francesi

Top Spots for Culture in Rome

One must-visit location is the church of San Luigi Dei Francesi, located conveniently near Piazza Navona and within walking distance of the bustling Pantheon. Here, amidst stunning Baroque architecture, you can experience an intimate viewing of Caravaggio’s divine triptych.

These paintings from the early 1600s showcase the masterful interplay of light and shadow and narrate the life of St. Matthew. Their permanent display at this church is sure to leave an impact on visitors.

Walking in Rome

Where to Stay in Rome

A clean, no-frills guesthouse located in a charming neighborhood between Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori, just a short walk from Castel Sant’Angelo and the Vatican. Though not much to photograph in the simple yet spacious room, mornings are delightfully spent wandering the serene streets behind Corso Vittorio Emanuele II toward the river. On a sunny September morning, it offers a tranquil vibe, even during rush hour.

A white blouse and perfumed soaps to take home from Rome

What to Bring Back from Rome

A white blouse, especially when I can find a budget-friendly one during late summer sales. My fashion inspiration originates from an Italian woman I saw on the Via Veneto when I was 18; I have since sought to emulate her style. Additionally, I like to pick up artisanal soaps from the pharmacy, as they are inexpensive and transform the unpacking process into a floral-scented delight.

Rome walking shoes

A Must-Have for Your Trip to Rome

A pair of white leather or pleather sneakers is essential. Comfortable yet stylish, these Veja classics are ideal for navigating this fashionable and somewhat formal city. I walked over ten miles in them, culminating with an aperitivo at the luxurious Hotel de Russie, where they felt entirely appropriate.
