Haad Rin is a narrow peninsula in the south of Koh Phangan, approximately 25 minutes by truck taxi from Thong Sala — the largest town on the island and the usual port of entry. Other parts of the island are accessible via a matrix of roads or by taxi boat directly from the beach.

Haad Rin Beaches

Haad Rin features two primary beaches: Sunrise and Sunset. Popular Sunrise Beach is a long stretch of powdery sand ideal for swimming, while Sunset Beach is predominantly rocky and better suited for watching beautiful sunsets.

Most of the action in Haad Rin—including the Full Moon Party—centers around Sunrise Beach and the adjacent main road. If you seek a quieter experience, consider staying closer to Sunset Beach.

Do not assume Haad Rin will be quiet when there is no Full Moon Party buildup happening. While the area quiets down in low season, nightly beach parties and vibrant streets remain active.

Haad Rin transforms entirely on the week prior to a Full Moon Party. Revelers arrive in droves, with attendance sometimes exceeding 20,000 people, making the streets and beach exceedingly crowded. Accommodation is scarce during this time, and prices soar — it is advisable to plan ahead or you may find yourself staying on neighboring Koh Tao or Koh Samui, necessitating a boat ride to the party!

They host a rock band every month on the Full Moon Party evening, making it an excellent spot for pre-partying.
• The Sanctuary: Should the party scene become overwhelming, consider a peaceful retreat at The Sanctuary or nearby Haad Yuan Beach, just 15 minutes by taxi boat from Haad Rin. This yoga and health retreat welcomes visitors to enjoy the wonderful food, relax on the beach, and connect with like-minded individuals seeking a break from the party atmosphere.

Arriving in Haad Rin

Upon disembarking from the boat in Thong Sala and navigating past touts for remote guesthouses, one should grab a waiting Songthaew (truck taxi) and ask for Haad Rin. The fare is typically around 100 baht; however, this price may increase a few days before the Full Moon Party or during the busy season.

Staying Safe in Haad Rin

While drugs remain illegal and are met with severe penalties in Southeast Asia, they are still readily available near the notorious Mellow Mountain bar at Sunrise Beach. You will encounter many individuals experimenting with magic mushrooms and partygoers engaging in reckless behavior induced by alcohol.

Though Haad Rin and Thailand are generally safe, theft can occur, especially during the Full Moon Party. It is wise to secure your valuables in reception safes, as cameras, phones, and personal items frequently go missing during beach parties.

You may notice individuals limping around Haad Rin with injuries; many are consequences of accidents from motorbike riding on the island’s challenging roads. Exercise extreme caution when driving and only consider renting a motorbike if you possess significant experience.

Women should beware of leaving their drinks unattended at parties, as dubious substances are occasionally added to ‘bucket’ drinks.
