Explore First Mesa: The Heart of Hopi Culture in Arizona

1. Introduction

A visit to the Hopi Mesas, located in northern Arizona, is a trip back in time. The Hopi people came to the Mesas in ancient times, maintaining the oldest continually practiced culture in the United States. According to Hopi guides, their traditions and beliefs have persisted for over 3,000 years.

2. Importance of Guiding

Due to the preservation of their religion and culture, the Hopi are protective of their practices and lifestyle. For a respectful and immersive experience, visiting with a knowledgeable guide is highly recommended.

3. Choosing the Right Guide

Key considerations:

  • Is the guide a native Hopi?
  • Does the guide possess commercial insurance and licensing if driving?
  • Can the guide communicate in the Hopi language?

Ray Coin, a guide with an office behind the Hopi Cultural Center, provides insightful tours. He has a rich background that includes experience at the Museum of Northern Arizona and lecturing on Hopi culture. His connection to both the Hopi world and the outside community enhances the touring experience.

4. Touring the Hopi Mesas

We arranged a comprehensive tour of the top destinations on the Hopi Mesas, which took at least a day. After a delightful breakfast at the Hopi Cultural Center, we were eager to explore.

5. First Mesa and Walpi Village

First Mesa is home to the towns of Walpi, Sichomovi, and Tewa. Walpi, the oldest and most historic, rises 300 feet above the valley. The drive up the winding road provides spectacular views of the landscape. We parked at the Ponsi Hall community center, where we gathered for our tour.

The tour commenced with a fascinating lecture by a knowledgeable Hopi woman, who outlined our walking tour. As we journeyed to Walpi, we encountered Kachina carvers and potters showcasing their crafts, providing a unique opportunity to engage with the local artistry. I highly recommend entering homes when invited, as the interiors reveal as much culture as the exteriors.

Upon entering Walpi, we were amazed to see a lifestyle steeped in tradition, with houses devoid of modern utilities. Our guide illuminated aspects of their history and practices, immersing us in the profound beauty and significance of the area.

First Mesa and Walpi tours are publicly accessible for a fee of $13 per person.

6. Second Mesa

Visitors can explore the village of Sipaulovi. Upon our arrival, we found the visitor’s center closed, which is often the case on the Hopi mesas. There is, however, a $15 per person charge for the walking tour when available. This village presents a unique glimpse into Hopi life.

7. Third Mesa and Oraibi

Ray guided us to Oraibi, likely the oldest continuously inhabited pueblo in the Southwest, tracing its history back to 1000-1100 A.D. As we traversed the village, preparations for an upcoming ceremonial were underway. It became evident that this space underwent significant change over the decades, marked by ideological divides.

Exploring with a guide is crucial for understanding the rich history and engaging respectfully with the traditions of the Hopi people. Oraibi, known as the “mother village,” presents a treasure trove of cultural insights.

8. Final Thoughts

To fully appreciate the Hopi culture and land, exploring all three mesas with a knowledgeable guide is essential. Embrace the opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect with the Hopi people’s worldview. The experience is enriching and will undoubtedly inspire a desire to return.
