Among the rare and reclusive residents are the coquí tree frog, the Puerto Rican parrot, and the pygmy anole.
How to Get There
If you are traveling from San Juan, simply take Route 3 out of the city and enjoy a scenic one-hour drive to Route 191, which leads directly into the rainforest. Additionally, various tour companies, such as Acampa, Adventours, Countryside Tours, and Legends of Puerto Rico, offer group excursions for visitors to explore El Yunque.
What to Do
Many tourists flock to El Yunque for its hiking trails, which cater to varying difficulty levels. The most popular trail is La Mina Trail, leading to La Mina Falls—the only waterfall in the rainforest open for swimming. On a hot day, after a vigorous hour of hiking, you can don your bathing suit and take a refreshing plunge under the cascading falls. However, be warned that La Mina can become crowded and does not have changing facilities, so be sure to plan accordingly.
When to Go
The rainforest welcomes visitors every day from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Given that the temperature remains relatively constant, El Yunque serves as a year-round destination for nature enthusiasts.
