Explore Carlsbad Caverns: A Natural Wonder in New Mexico

1. Introduction

Discover the breathtaking beauty of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, often compared to a “Grand Canyon with a roof on it”. Delving into the depths of this enchanting underground world reveals some of the largest and most intricate caverns on the planet.

2. History

Carlsbad Caverns was designated as a national monument on October 25, 1923, and officially became a national park on May 14, 1930. In 1995, it received recognition as a World Heritage Site.

The park features two historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places—the Cavern Historic District and the Rattlesnake Springs Historic District, with over a million cultural specimens preserved in the park museum.

3. When to Visit

The park welcomes visitors year-round, but spring is particularly stunning when the desert blooms. For those interested in witnessing bats, late April through October is the best time to visit.

4. Getting There

To reach Carlsbad Caverns, travelers can take New Mexico Highway 7. The entrance is a scenic 7-mile drive from Whites City to the Visitor Center, located about 20 miles southwest of Carlsbad, NM.

For public transport, Greyhound and TNM&O bus lines serve the area, and New Mexico Airlines connects Carlsbad with Albuquerque. Major airlines offer services to nearby airports in Roswell, El Paso, Lubbock, and Midland.

5. Fees and Permits

An Entrance Fee ticket is necessary for all visitors entering Carlsbad Cavern, valid for three days. America the Beautiful pass holders can admit themselves and three additional adults. A free backcountry use permit is required for those planning to camp.
