Explore the Charms of a Berber Village in Morocco

Experiencing Morocco was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my travels this year! It was exhilarating and surprisingly so. The primary attraction of a trip to Morocco is the rich authenticity that one encounters. The local populace does not feel the need to conform to any preconceived notions that travelers might expect from emerging travel destinations. A visit to Morocco and particularly to Marrakesh indeed gives a genuine insight into Moroccan life.

For a deeper experience of authenticity, I suggest visiting a Berber village. The term “Berber” carries potential political implications, and our tour guide recognized the people as Berbers, though he noted that they are also known as “Amazighs.” Admittedly, I have a fleeting attention span and found myself distracted while he was elaborating on this, particularly by an adorable young goat frolicking nearby.

During our excursion, we made a brief stop at a village located in the hills before reaching our intended destination. Do not be misled by the quaint appearance of these houses—they are equipped with modern amenities such as electricity, cable TV, and telephones!

The houses are situated near a water source for practical reasons, and at specific times, villagers can be seen doing their laundry there.

You could observe children from the village approaching us with remarkable agility akin to mountain goats. Their swift ascent up the steep terrain was truly impressive.

Olive trees thrive nearby the rivers, serving as a staple in Moroccan cuisine.

Upon arrival at the village we intended to explore, a family awaited to greet us.

We navigated through the village, carefully maneuvering through steep alleyways, albeit not with the same grace exhibited by the local children.

We then proceeded on a mini tour around various sections of the village before returning to our vehicles to continue our Moroccan adventure!

I highly recommend taking the time to connect with a Moroccan family during your visit! Engaging first-hand is a wonderful means to gain deeper insights into Morocco’s culture and its remarkable individuals.

(And endeavor to resist the temptation of being sidetracked by adorable baby goats frolicking about, or you may find yourself pondering questions regarding what the tour guide elucidated throughout the day!)
