The Château Royal de Laeken in Brussels

Having lived across various regions, GoTravelDaily Local Analia Glogowski found it challenging to establish her roots until she arrived in Brussels, a city where she genuinely feels a sense of belonging.

As a lifestyle and travel blogger, photographer, and assistant within the European Parliament, Analia cherishes exploring her adopted city in pursuit of the most intriguing places to enjoy fine dining and relaxation.

When Friends Visit… my objective is to demonstrate that Brussels presents far more than the Grand Place, beer, and fries. From underground concerts to pop-up park festivals and stylish rooftop bars, Brussels continually surprises; I might take them to a trone concert in an abandoned residence. During the summer months, we would likely attend an Apéro Urbain, which combines music with a charming picnic atmosphere.

A Typical Weekend Involves… shopping for groceries at the local market on Place Flagey prior to stopping by Charli, renowned for its viennoiseries in Ste Catherine. Weather permitting, the weekend entices a lavish brunch at La Fabrique nestled in Egmond Park, famous for all types of egg dishes and their irresistibly indulgent sugar pie. I often continue my day tracking down antique curiosities at the Place du Jeu-de-Balle Flea Market.

Lunch Might Mean… gathering with friends at Grand Central to enjoy a substantial plate from their extensive seasonal buffet, often concluding with coffee on the terrace overlooking Parc Léopold. If we’re particularly hungry, we might indulge in the truffle fettuccine served in a colossal parmesan wheel for that added decadence.

When I Need a Caffeine Hit… I usually choose Mok, followed by a visit to Café Velvet, both conveniently located in the Ste Catherine area and acclaimed for their premium coffee offerings alongside healthy vegan snacks. When in the EU quarter, I often drop by Karsmakers on rue de Trèves for a latte complemented by a carrot cake to take away.

When I’m Up for a Big Night Out… my evening commences with an aperitivo at Hotel Le Berger before venturing to Spirito Martini, a converted church transformed into a nightclub. Occasionally, I visit Jeux d’Hiver, a chalet-style resto-club set within woodlands exuding an eerie forest ambiance. If I am in the mood for nostalgia, my night typically concludes at L’Archiduc, where I am instantly transported back in time by half a century.

If I’m in the Mood to Shop… I gravitate towards rue Antoine Dansaert, a haven for treasure hunters eager to explore concept stores such as A suivre, Le Magasin, Icon, and Vêtue. For unique gifts, Urban Therapy on rue de Flandre features an eclectic mix of items, from original terrariums to vodka-infused teas and creatively revamped caps.

When I Want to Get Out of the City… Antwerp consistently ranks first on my itinerary. This cultural hub of Belgium is only a 40-minute train ride away, showcasing architectural wonders like The Port House designed by Zaha Hadid, in addition to culinary delights such as The Jane, complemented by an expansive array of avant-garde fashion.

When I Want to Explore Art… I often check for events at Tour & Taxis, well known for hosting art fairs and engaging exhibitions. MIMA’s offerings in contemporary street art also provide an excellent reason to take a stroll along the canal and savor coffee at nearby cafés, like Walvis.

If the Weather Calls for a Day at the Beach… I plan a day trip to Ostend or Knokke-Heist, ideal for relaxing under the sun and enjoying an abundance of ice cream. The charming striped beach houses along the shore are a favorite of mine, utilized by locals for storing their sunshades and sunbed essentials.

If I’m Pursuing Regional Produce… I typically visit BelgoMarkt or one of the Färm outlets throughout the capital, noted for offering locally sourced, sustainable products, predominantly crafted by small-scale farmers and artisans. To limit their environmental impact, customers are encouraged to bring their own containers.

For a Special Occasion… I consider the award-winning La Villa in the Sky as an exceptional venue for dining. Perched atop a tower and providing breathtaking views of Brussels, chef Alexandre Dionisio offers a preeminent tasting menu for an intimate experience with just 24 guests. Alternatively, for a sophisticated yet more affordable choice, Hortense & Humus in the Flagey region showcases botanical dishes complemented by elegant cocktails.

To Stock Up on Chocolate… I head to Pierre Marcolini for a selection of truffles du jour, a discovery assortment featuring ganache-laden chocolates, or the iconic Palets Fins collection filled with caramel delights. For budgetary considerations, Dolfin’s enticing chocolate bars are available at most supermarkets at around 4 euros each, showcasing recipes such as candied orange, caramelized pear, and puffed rice.

For Affordable Eats… I often enjoy a meal at one of the many fritkots, which are street kiosks known for their fried fare, particularly the famed Maison Antoine on place Jourdan. The Belgian fries undergo a triple frying process in pork fat, and a mitraillette (a baguette filled with meat and fries) is a must-try street food offering.
