Bali, an Indonesian island celebrated for its breathtaking landscape, requires little introduction. Nonetheless, there are several key aspects to consider prior to visiting the island that merit sharing.
Even if you have not traveled here, it’s likely that you know someone who has or have a desire to experience it yourself.
The advantageous part is that amid its relatively compact size, there’s an unexpected variety of activities to engage in while here.
It genuinely appears to be the kind of destination where you could comfortably spend weeks without feeling fatigued.
We recently returned to Bali, and although we had previously visited, albeit for a significantly shorter duration, there were numerous surprises awaiting us on this island.
Context: During our earlier visit, we resided in Singapore, making weekend trips to Bali a regular occurrence. Now that we are based in London, it seems much more indulgent.
I found myself taken aback by how many delightful nuances existed in Bali, especially considering my prior familiarity with the island.
Consequently, I felt compelled to share with you essential insights to consider while planning a visit to Bali.

1.) Where to Stay
The southern region of the island is arguably the most favored by visitors.
This area tends to attract a significant number of tourists, which can be daunting for those who prefer solitude. However, this portion of Bali is well-loved for its stunning beaches and an array of exquisite dining options, so it’s advisable to engage here, even for the more introverted traveler.
Personally, a combination of both busy and tranquil experiences would be the optimal way to immerse oneself in what the island offers: spending a few days away from the bustling areas before embracing the vibrant island life with fellow travelers.
2.) Strap on Those Walking Shoes
Be prepared for a considerable amount of walking and hiking to witness some of the island’s most magnificent sights, particularly the waterfalls. This involves traversing hundreds of occasionally uneven steps and navigating through jungles to discover these stunning cascades.
Regardless of the challenges that may arise, the journey is undoubtedly rewarding once you reach the tranquil spots.
3.) Yes, Even the Temples Can Require Some Hiking
Continuing the theme of exploring, several temples also necessitate hiking. Some are accessible and easily navigable, while others demand a fair amount of hiking to reach (often situated in the mountains) or involve significant stair climbing within them to navigate the various sections.
4.) Beware of Leeches
Exercise caution regarding leeches while walking through the jungle. Generally, your chances of encountering them are low; only one member of our group experienced leeches on his skin after trekking to the waterfall despite extensive walking through the jungle over three days.
Nevertheless, it is prudent to inspect your legs and body after prolonged walks to check for any unwelcome guests (removing leeches is significantly easier if you catch them early).
5.) Consider Outdoor Living
The allure of staying in a luxurious villa in the jungle, featuring outdoor showers, baths, or even outdoor beds, can be enticing. Nonetheless, it is crucial to remember that you are indeed in the jungle, sharing your space with the local wildlife.
This was indeed a significant surprise for me. I had romanticized the idea of outdoor baths, similar to what you might experience in the Maldives, which is why we chose our villa with an infinity pool overlooking the jungle. However, after encountering sizable spiders, large toads, and various other creatures, the appeal of jungle living quickly dissipated.
With so many moments filled with surprises induced by animals, by the end of our stay, I found myself wishing we had opted for a different accommodation to balance our experience.
6.) Enjoy the Massages
Massages are incredibly affordable, so be prepared to indulge in as many as you can manage! (We found ourselves having two in a single day at times).
7.) Hiring a Driver can be Cheaper Than Taxis
If driving is not your forte, there’s no need for concern — you can hire a driver for the day for a reasonable price (approximately $20 to $40 for the entire day).
While taxis are also affordable, negotiation is often necessary, as some drivers may attempt to charge more than the fair price. Moreover, ridesharing services are available in Bali as well!
8.) Be Ready to Haggle
As mentioned earlier, haggling is common for various transactions here (with the exception of dining in restaurants).
9.) Finding Local Dining Can Be Challenging
Do not overly fixate on seeking out restaurants that are purportedly “where the locals eat.” Many locals typically dine with their families at home, resulting in numerous restaurants aimed at catering to visitors.
10.) Be Prepared to Pay Entry Fees for Most Attractions
Regarding fees, an entry fee is typically required even for accessing waterfalls!
Locals understand the fascination tourists have for their natural wonders, and thus, it is common to encounter fees at even the most remote attractions (unless you arrive later in the day around 5 or 5:30 PM, which may not provide you with the best light for your visit). The fees are usually minimal, often just pocket change, so they are reasonable and worth paying. Just remember to carry cash for these costs.
11.) Avoid Tap Water
It is advisable not to consume tap water while in Bali. Although it may come as no surprise, it is critical to remember that drinking from the tap is not safe.
12.) Don’t Base Your Trip on Seasonal Rain Expectations
Rainfall can occur extensively in the dry season, and likewise, one can experience sunny weather during the rainy season. Therefore, it is unwise to strictly associate one season with specific weather patterns since unpredictability may surprise you.
13.) Always Carry Cash
Most places accept cards for payment, which may seem obvious. However, it is advisable to have some cash on hand, particularly for the small fees previously discussed. Rest assured, your card will be handy for the majority of transactions.
