8 Essential Tips for Visiting Bermuda
Bermuda is a beautiful little island in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean and is famed for its amazing beaches.
On a recent trip to New York, Lloyd and I decided to pop over to Bermuda to explore the island and discover all the things to do.
Long story short; the experience was absolutely fantastic!
It’s a remarkable island, and I highly recommend visiting. We had an enjoyable time (along with quite a few Rum Swizzles), and I can say without hesitation that we would eagerly return.
While much of what we experienced on the island was what you’d expect from a stunning location like Bermuda (gorgeous beaches, breathtaking scenery, and lively nightlife), there were elements that surprised us.
To help you avoid any unexpected encounters, here are key things to know before visiting Bermuda.
1.) Bermuda can be expensive
It’s important to note that it can be quite pricey. Not just in the typical sense of expensive restaurants. For instance, going out for dinner and drinks for two could easily land you a bill of around £400.
Even groceries are surprisingly steep, with a single apple priced around £1.50, and a pack of eight costing approximately $12. A friend of mine, who is an expat residing on the island, stated that many visitors and expats (like her) choose not to cook at home because it’s often just as expensive as dining out.
So, prepare your wallet accordingly.

2.) Look out for stinging jellyfish
Specifically, watch out for the Portuguese man o’war. Despite their appearance, these creatures are not true jellyfish; they belong to a group known as siphonophores (thanks, Wikipedia).
These jellyfish can be painful, dangerous, and are often difficult to spot while swimming.
Before entering the water, be sure to check for any warnings regarding a high incidence of the Portuguese man o’war.
3.) You can’t rent cars
Therefore, if you plan to explore the island, consider obtaining a motorcycle license prior to your visit.

4.) Bermuda is not in the Caribbean
Although it’s technically considered a part of the Caribbean, it’s somewhat distinct from it.
This classification doesn’t significantly impact your enjoyment of the island; many of its attractions are reminiscent of a Caribbean getaway.
However, it does affect travel logistics. Bermuda is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, which leads us to the next point.
5.) Bermuda is easy to visit
The beauty of Bermuda’s beaches is undeniable. When you visit, make sure to pack your camera along with your swimwear to capture stunning photos.
This is especially true when you’re snorkeling as well.
