Exploring Essaouira – A Budget-Friendly Getaway
In our travel series, we document what was spent on a recent getaway. In this edition, we explore how to combine budget spending in Essaouira, Morocco, with luxurious treats.
I’m a writer and yoga teacher based in Taghazout, Morocco. Drawn by the ebb and flow of life in this surfing capital, I recently sought a road-trip adventure to experience the vibrant city of Essaouira.
Traveling with a friend from the UK, we drove up the coast to Essaouira, eager to share my favorite experiences in the city while discovering new ones together.
Choosing an affordable hotel centrally located, we prioritized spending on boutique shopping, spa experiences, and the city’s diverse restaurant scene.
Pre-trip Spending
Accommodation: $88 for two nights at a budget-friendly hotel, recommended for its central location overlooking Moulay Hassan Square. Breakfast is enjoyed on the bright roof terrace. However, it’s worth noting that nearby live music may disrupt sleep.
City taxes: $.40 per person per day

On the Ground
Sunday
Breakfast: We departed on our adventure to Essaouira at 10 am. The three-hour road trip included snacks from a local patisserie ($1 for two pains au chocolat) and coffees from a roadside cafe ($1.40 for two).
Arrival: We parked in Essaouira’s port lot, as our hotel lacked parking facilities. Parking cost $6.15 per day, but with some negotiation and luck, it could be as low as $2 per day.
Lunch: After dropping off our bags at the hotel, we explored the Loft, a cozy restaurant offering fresh Mediterranean dishes. The total bill, including water, orange juice, and two mains, was $35 for both.
Activities: Following lunch, we checked into our hotel and visited a nearby spa for a traditional hammam experience—a 35-minute exfoliation with black soap for $23.50 each.
Later, we wandered along Avenue de l’Istiqlal, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the spice and fish souks, immersing ourselves in the local culture.
Drinks: After freshening up, we headed to the lively Taros rooftop bar to enjoy sunset cocktails (Margarita for $9.25, San Miguel for $4.60), all while soaking in the upbeat live music.
Dinner: For dinner, we visited Umia, a stylish tapas bar where most ingredients come directly from local markets. We indulged in octopus carpaccio ($12.30) and smoked trout pancakes ($14.25), complemented by a glass of exquisite Moroccan wine ($7).
Total: $161 (or $80.50 each)
Monday
Breakfast: We started our day at Patisserie Driss, an iconic local establishment since 1928 where we celebrated the morning with coffee, orange juice, and pastries while enjoying the historic ambiance.
Activities: Following breakfast, we strolled through the Medina, visiting unique shops and galleries, finally reaching the ramparts for a stunning view of the Atlantic.
Lunch: At the nearby fishing port, we savored grilled fresh seafood for $10.25 per person, surrounded by the charm of the local atmosphere.
In the afternoon, we explored colorful concept stores that showcase upcoming local designers. Enjoying a calm beach walk concluded our relaxed afternoon.
Tuesday
Breakfast: We decided to have breakfast at Mandala Society, where the menu features organic and vegetarian options in a stylish setting. I enjoyed a smoothie, while my friend opted for a chia pudding bowl.
Activities: We made our way to Jardins de la Villa Maroc, a boutique hotel where we spent our final afternoon unwinding by the heated pool and indulging in a Mediterranean BBQ lunch.
Total: $92.25 (my share = $44.60)
The Final Tally
Overall, my pre-trip spending totaled $45, and the on-ground expenses amounted to $162.60, bringing the total cost to US $207.60 or 2032 MAD.
Cost vs Value
Essaouira offers experiences suitable for all budgets. Our trip balanced budget-friendly adventures with splurges on dining and unique experiences. We embraced free explorations, such as wandering through the Medina and enjoying the local culinary scene.

Exploring Essaouira on a budget is entirely feasible. For those arriving by plane at Essaouira Airport, expect an airport transfer to the city center priced around $27. Car rentals start at $36 per day, providing flexible travel options.
