Essential El Nido Travel Guide: Explore Palawan’s Best

Ultimate Guide to El Nido, Palawan

El Nido has been described as an “unspoiled paradise on earth”, a “Philippine gem” and “the Philippines’ last frontier”. This was my first trip to the Philippines, and I wanted to see if the hype was true.

To be honest, while I was intrigued by these descriptions, the real reason I wanted to visit was to see the beaches that inspired “The Beach,” my favorite novel as a teenager.

What El Nido offers are undoubtedly the most breathtaking beaches I’ve ever had the privilege of seeing. Although the area is more touristy than when it was first discovered, it still maintains an ‘edge of the world’ feel, enhancing its allure. Consequently, my visit opened my eyes to the need for personal growth, and I am thankful for that insight. The stunning beaches made a lasting impression on me; thank you, El Nido!

Thus, I wrote this guide not only to better prepare you for your visit but also as a tribute to this magical place. I hope you enjoy my Ultimate Guide to El Nido, Palawan.

5 Things to Do in El Nido

#1 Chill Out at Marimegmeg Beach

Marimegmeg Beach may not be the closest beach to El Nido, but it’s definitely one of the prettiest. While other nearby beaches may offer proximity, they often lack in beauty. This beach is perfect for those relaxed days when you want to enjoy the sun without the hassle of traveling far.

The beach comes with a bar that offers delicious sandwiches and drinks, making it an ideal spot to catch the sunset.

#2 Hire a Boat and Go to Pinabuyutan Island

From Marimegmeg Beach, it’s easy to take a boat to my favorite island: Pinabuyutan Island. It’s my favorite due to its breathtaking beach, which is simply perfect.

We hired a local fisherman to take us to Pinabuyutan Island and back. The experience was enriching, providing us with an unforgettable day at the beach!

#3 Hire a Tricycle for the Day and See Nacpan Beach

Nacpan Beach is another beautiful beach to explore. There’s a small restaurant available, making it convenient for a full day out. It has safe swimming areas, and further exploration reveals hidden natural wonders.

#4 Rent a Kayak in El Nido

Kayak rentals in El Nido start at just 200 PHP (around $4), making it an affordable option for adventure seekers. This activity helps you explore secluded beaches and enjoy the beautiful waters, making it a must-do for nature lovers.

#5 ABCD Tours

The ABCD Tours are popular with visitors, offering an opportunity to explore hidden coves and stunning beaches. Although reviews vary, many travelers rave about the incredible locations the tours visit. Make sure to check them out for a comprehensive El Nido experience!

The Food in the Philippines

When discussing food, it’s essential to mention the risk of food poisoning, particularly if you’re new to Southeast Asia. Adhering to food safety rules is crucial, such as eating only freshly cooked meals and avoiding risky ingredients.

The Fruit in the Philippines

The fruit is fresh, juicy, and delicious—definitely a highlight of any visit to the Philippines. Make sure to try the local mangoes!

Filipino Adobo

Adobo is a quintessential Filipino dish consisting of meat, seafood, or vegetables, marinated and braised in soy sauce and spices. When I returned to the Philippines as a vegan, I discovered that vegan adobo is just as delightful!

Where to Stay in El Nido

While exploring options, I must mention a common mistake: staying at Novie’s Tourist Inn, which did not meet expectations. While it may be affordable, issues like poor wifi and a lack of hot water can detract from the experience.

Alternatives recommended by fellow travelers include:

  • Buko Beach Resort
  • Miniloc Island Resort
  • Lime Resort
  • Lagún Hotel
  • Bulskamp Inn
