Effective Travel Tips to Curb Snoring for a Peaceful Journey

I perceive myself as rather an irregular snorer.

Generally, I do not frequently snore; however, over the last few years, particularly exacerbated since relocating to London, there have been occasions where I become that individual whose snoring elicits amusement or frustration from those nearby.

I suspect it is also related to the type of snoring. My snore tends to manifest as a high-pitched whistle rather than a loud rattle. This peculiar experience (my considerate friends even suggested I utilize a sleep app to document it) has awakened me several times in the past.

While it is one matter to irritate others (which I can tolerate), when it begins to disrupt my own sleep, it becomes one of the most exasperating experiences while traveling.

WHAT TYPE OF SNORING IS IT?

Fortunately, I am aware of the triggers for my snoring, which primarily fall into two categories: extreme fatigue (the kind that can transform even the most composed individuals into droolers) or allergic reactions (notably, hay fever in my case). Occasionally, there may be unexplained episodes of snoring, but generally, it is confined to these two triggers.

Summertime is particularly challenging; there are occasions when even the most effective hay fever medications seem inadequate. For instance, in our English Road Trip video, it is evident that not long into the journey, my eyes are noticeably redder due to hay fever symptoms. While most people experience nasal congestion in Autumn or Winter, mine persists throughout the summer months.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

Recently, after consulting with specialists, I discovered that my type of snoring fits the category of nasal snoring.

Essentially, this occurs when one’s nostrils become constricted and nasal breath is insufficient, necessitating mouth breathing. The sound produced when air passes at the back of the throat creates this specific form of snoring.

I had not previously considered this (my typical focus is on securing nasal sprays, eye drops, and various other remedies to alleviate a blocked nose), but once it was explained to me, along with some additional research on my part, it all became clear.

HOW TO FIX IT.

It is fascinating how a bit of information can change one’s perspective. Understanding precisely what was happening enabled me to address the issue effectively. As the summer wore on, the snoring became increasingly bothersome.

This led me to the Rhinomed Mute Snoring device, which effectively reduces snoring rather than intensifying it.

My discovery of this device was rather serendipitous, as I initially heard about a comparable product intended for athletes (cyclists use it to maintain open airways during events like the Tour de France) and subsequently learned they developed a variant suitable for sleep.

Even the team at KLM Airlines, who have extensive experience with inflight snoring, recommend using it to achieve improved sleep quality while flying. They noted, “Occasionally, we notice that passengers become overly relaxed and may slip into a (not always serene) slumber, thus, the Mute device could aid in these situations.”

With endorsements from both the Tour de France cyclists and the KLM crew, coupled with my desire for a good night’s sleep, I was motivated to give the Mute device a trial.

WHAT’S IT LIKE?

Surprisingly, the Mute Snoring Device is remarkably comfortable and discreet! This is significant coming from someone who has consistently avoided wearing contact lenses due to their discomfort. I have attempted five separate times, but the sensation felt unnatural to me. Even suggesting I would get used to them after a few days did not convince me, resulting in my decision to forgo contact lenses altogether.

In essence, I am not fond of uncomfortable products, so I was especially delighted to discover this one is highly comfortable and a natural fit. Comfort during sleep is exceptionally important.

The most gratifying aspect of this product is the immediate relief experienced upon application, as it opens up the nostrils. It is amusing how moments of nasal obstruction can make one genuinely appreciate times when breathing is effortless.

Given the unpredictability of allergens and nasal congestion while traveling, it is advantageous to have effective management strategies in place.

EXTRA PERKS!

Unexpectedly, I discovered another benefit of the device: by enhancing airflow, it significantly improves sleep quality, allowing for a more rejuvenating wake-up experience.

To be candid, in situations of extreme fatigue, any amount of sleep felt beneficial; however, the most noteworthy improvement occurred during an acute hay fever episode. Anyone who has tried sleeping with nasal obstruction can attest to the poor sleep quality and feeling more worn out upon awakening.

I’ve attempted to use those instant nasal sprays, which can be effective, yet medical advice cautions against using them for longer than seven consecutive days (before the body becomes desensitized to the medication). My hay fever extends across the summer months, culminating in the need to abandon the seven-day ‘instant relief’ strategy. Additionally, antihistamines rarely yield consistent relief.

The Mute device operates efficiently to mitigate nasal snoring as it allows me to regain control without relying on medication. #Winning (Of course, individual results may vary; however, any reduction in snoring is a significant victory).

You can observe its design in this video below (it has quickly become an essential travel item for me). Skip to the 0:50 mark to view it.

WHERE TO GET IT?

I discovered it on Amazon in the US (it’s also available at locations like Walgreens). In the UK, it can be found at your local Boots store (or online at the Boots.com website).

It’s important to note that each individual is unique; therefore the device is available in three distinct sizes rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

The individual sizes are also adjustable, ensuring you are highly likely to find one that fits comfortably. It may be advantageous to start with a trial pack to determine which size is most suited to you.

YOUR TURN!

If you decide to try these devices, please share your thoughts! I had not encountered recommendations from friends regarding these, so I would genuinely be interested to hear from others who have used them as well. Perhaps we can establish our own Snorers Anonymous group!
