Italy boasts an extensive system of toll roads that cover the mainland from north to south and west coast to east coast. This network includes the island of Sicily and is known as the autostrada. The autostrada is specifically designed for faster travel compared to the superstrada (non-toll highway).

How to Drive on the Autostrada

Autostrada highways are indicated by an “A” followed by a number (like A1, the major autostrada connecting Milan and Rome). Notably, signs directing you toward the autostrada are green.

To enter the autostrada, you will take a ticket at the entrance gate. Follow the signs pointing toward your destination, which is typically indicated by a major city, so it’s essential to be aware of your route. You will settle your toll payment at a booth upon exiting; however, note that in some areas, tolls may also be charged periodically along the autostrada. It’s advisable to carry cash, as US credit cards might not work at the toll booths. When reaching the toll booths, select the lane marked with a hand and money symbol.

The maximum speed limit on any autostrada is 130 kilometers per hour, but on certain portions (like between Viareggio and Lucca, and in Liguria), the limit lowers to 110. Therefore, it’s important to observe posted speed limit signs. On curvy stretches, speed limits may decrease to as low as 60 kilometers per hour, and construction zones often feature reduced speed limits. Always drive in the right-hand lane unless overtaking. Certain segments of the autostrada consist of three or four lanes, and on these stretches, you may utilize the lane adjacent to the right, which is primarily reserved for trucks. The left lane is designated for passing vehicles.
