Summary
There’s no avoiding it, Metéora represents an exquisite and entirely surprising discovery in the traditionally picturesque nation of Greece. However, have you ever encountered Metéora?
Many of us have preconceived ideas of what Greece exemplifies, right? The mesmerizing azure of the Aegean Sea, the historical significance of Athens, or even the allure of the numerous Greek islands to explore (including the charming island of Santorini) but few possess the unique beauty akin to that of Metéora located in central Greece.
Let’s clarify the fundamental details so we can concentrate on the breathtaking landscape!
What is Metéora?
How many monasteries are there?
1.) The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron
2.) The Holy Monastery of Varlaam
3.) The Holy Monastery of Rousanou/St. Barbara
4.) The Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas
5.) The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen and finally
6.) The Monastery of the Holy Trinity (which happens to be my absolute favorite)
Where is Metéora?
Metéora is located centrally within mainland Greece. If you envision placing a pin directly in the center of a map of Greece, that would represent Metéora! For a more precise location (though far less enjoyable), Metéora is situated in Kalabaka, Greece.
How to get there…
One can take a train from the heart of Athens to Kalabaka on a daily basis. The travel duration is approximately 5-6 hours, which may vary based on the time of departure. It’s a lengthy journey, so bring along some music and ensure you rest adequately before the trip! When traveling from Thessaloniki, anticipate a journey of around 4 hours.
Additionally, bus services operate between the major towns, although they can be subject to unanticipated delays without much prior notice. Additional information regarding bus transfers can be found here.
Who should visit Metéora?
Let’s be candid… ANYONE should consider a visit to Metéora, regardless of religious beliefs! This location is breathtaking and exemplifies the remarkable human achievements of centuries past. If you are an enthusiast of geography, like me, you will likely admire the stunning vistas of the rock formations. The setting is also steeped in rich culture and history, which caters perfectly to those who are passionate about historical narratives! 😉
However, as certain areas within Metéora can be relatively elevated, those with acrophobia (fear of heights) may want to reassess their visit. Those rock formations are indeed steep!
How much does it cost?
The fees to enter the monasteries can be relatively affordable. In some instances, admission costs less than €5 / £4 / $4.80. Conversely, if you are interested in a guided tour (lasting approximately half a day), anticipate a payment around €25.
Dress code?
Indeed, there is a dress code—visitors are expected to adhere to specific attire as they enter a sacred site. It is advisable to don clothing that covers your legs and shoulders, among other areas, as a precautionary measure to avoid any entry issues.
What does it look like?
Have a look for yourself below… how could I possibly articulate the magnificence of those views!!! *insert 50 million heart emojis* 😉
