Discover Nice’s Old Town: Relaxing Walks Through Scenic Streets

Discover the Allure of Nice’s Old Town

Delve into Local Strolls, a narrative exploring favorite walks in various hometowns. Each route unveils a snapshot of urban life, guiding you to lesser-known attractions and cherished local spots. Here, Chloé Braithwaite takes us on a gentle stroll through the cafes, shops, and sights of Nice’s Old Town.

Getting Lost in Nice

Nice is the type of city where one should truly allow themselves to get lost. Wandering down to Vieux Nice (Old Town) offers the ideal opportunity to explore the narrow, winding streets. This method of exploration is, in my opinion, the best way to fully immerse in the vibrant character of the city.

Your Journey Begins

While many locals recommend starting your adventure at Place Massena, I prefer to begin at Place Garibaldi. This picturesque square is particularly delightful in the spring, when the blooming trees provide a lovely backdrop.

Exploring Culinary Delights

Proceed past the fountain and take the second left onto rue Pairolière, often referred to as “the belly of Old Nice” due to its array of authentic food shops. Here, you can find unique spices and local Niçois snacks from specialty stores. Although the shops may lack grandeur, their offerings provide a genuine taste of the Niçois cuisine.

As you continue, stop by Alexis Monod Chocolaterie where the chocolatier, often present, utilizes local ingredients such as Menton lemons, Nice roses, and Provence lavender to create exquisite chocolates.

A Moment to Relax at Brume Coffee

Next, visit Brume Coffee, a cozy cafe known for its exceptional lattes. The outdoor seating is ideal for some people-watching on sunny days. The menu changes with the seasons; however, their coffee and fresh baked goods consistently impress.

Cultural Experiences Await

Revitalized with caffeine, head to Place de la Tour, a small square dominated by a massive oak tree. Here, you’ll find the Saint-François Tower, open to the public on weekends. Climbing to the top rewards you with breathtaking views of Nice.

The Vibrancy of Place Saint-François

A short walk from here leads you to Place Saint-François, known for its morning fish market where seagulls eagerly await their opportunities for scraps. This bustling square is a reflection of the Mediterranean’s rich culinary offerings.

Historical Landmarks and Hidden Gems

Continuing your exploration will bring you to a fork in the road. Look for rue Droite, a street steeped in medieval charm, where you’ll discover the workshop of a local leather artisan and a renowned antique shop filled with hand-picked vintage treasures.

As you travel further down rue Droite, keep an eye out for the Musée Palais Lascaris located at number 15, alongside the lesser-known yet striking Saint-Jacques-le-Majeure de Nice Church situated at Place de Jésus.

Ending at Cours Saleya

Your stroll will lead you to Place Charles Felix, where you can admire the landmark yellow apartment building that once housed Henri Matisse. Although it’s not accessible to the public, it provides a nice viewpoint before arriving at your final destination, Cours Saleya. This vibrant marketplace is perfect for shopping for fresh food, flowers, or unique finds.

From Cours Saleya, you can easily reach the famous Promenade des Anglais. Before wrapping up your adventure, venture up the stairs leading to the rooftop terraces of nearby bars for one last, stunning view of the Mediterranean.
