Explore Bermuda: A Hidden Gem in the Atlantic

“So, what took you so long to come to Bermuda?” My husband, Rob, and I were sitting at the handsome wood-paneled bar of the Rosewood Bermuda, and the bartender, Owen Lightbourne, was ever-so-politely calling us out. We’d just arrived at the palatial resort, which sits a stone’s throw from sprawling estates owned by notable figures. There are four pools, a croquet lawn, and sweeping ocean views. Our room wasn’t ready yet, so we were killing time while our toddler, Bobby, happily ran between our seats.

The honest answer, we explained, was that we’d put Bermuda off because it always seemed too close, too easy. Before parenthood, our priority was faraway. Now a destination within easy reach — one with beautiful beaches, no less — is salvation.

5 Things to do in Bermuda

Bermuda’s appeal extends beyond its proximity, making it attractive to various travelers. A fishhook-shaped archipelago with pink shores in the middle of the Atlantic, it is quiet, beautiful, and steeped in history. First inhabited by the English in 1609, Bermuda was a trading hub for centuries. In the 20th century, it became a vacation spot for the East Coast elite. However, as tourism slowed, many travelers sought other Caribbean islands. Nevertheless, Bermuda is not to be forgotten, being located just 650 miles due east of North Carolina with a similar high season running from May through September.

The Hotels Are Upping Their Game

In recent years, Bermuda has made a comeback, largely due to its hosting of the 2017 America’s Cup. This high-profile sailing regatta inspired new hotels to open and older hotels to spruce themselves up. As I discovered during my visit, Bermudians are excited to have their home back in the conversation. Here are top reasons to visit right now:

Before staying at the Rosewood, we checked in to the Loren. The developer, Stephen King, saw potential in a decaying property along Pink Sand Beach and embarked on the island’s first new build in nearly a decade. The Loren showcases stylish and spacious suites, beginning at 600 square feet. At the cliffside infinity pool, couples appeared hypnotized by the waves crashing over the rocks, while Bobby was treated to fries and pizza.

Two luxury resorts from Marriott International are under development. The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Hotel at Caroline Bay, which overlooks a secluded cove, will open soon, and the St. Regis Bermuda is set to follow. Older properties are shifting away from British-colonial decor thanks to substantial renovations, including the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, which now doubles as an art museum.

The Rosewood Bermuda also recently unveiled its new look, transforming its décor while maintaining its secluded beach, ideal for family fun.

Someone Else Does the Driving

Visitors to Bermuda must note that they cannot rent cars; however, they can explore by using mopeds or the public bus system. Taxis are a convenient choice, especially for families. Riding through Bermuda’s winding rural roads is delightful, showcasing immaculate pastel-colored homes and lush greenery.

You Will Talk to Locals

To explore Bermuda’s history, we began our adventure in St. George, aided by young entrepreneur Kristin White, who offers bike tours and historical walks. She aims to share Bermuda’s rich stories with visitors. Exploring the cobbled streets, we encountered the former residence of a significant historical figure and learned about its past from Kristin.

The Seafood is Superb

Bermuda’s culinary scene showcases a wealth of seafood options. One of our memorable meals was at Wahoo’s Bistro & Patio, specializing in spiny Bermuda lobster. Additionally, local debates about the best fish sandwich can guide your culinary journey throughout the island.

Rainy Days Can Be Fun

When the weather turned, we found ourselves exploring Hamilton’s unique shops. The Bermuda Bookstore offers a vast collection of literature, while the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art showcases pieces inspired by the island. The museum’s ongoing exhibitions reflect the vibrant creativity of local and international artists.
