Exploring The Magnificent Arundel Castle In West Sussex, England
For an extended period, I have longed to visit Arundel Castle. The first time I encountered its name, I presumed it was a fictional location, reminiscent of a setting from the Lord of the Rings. However, once I discovered it truly existed and witnessed images, I became captivated.
Another aspiration was to overnight in a historical castle, not merely referring to my home in jest but rather to experience genuine history.
Upon learning about Amberley Castle, conveniently located 10 to 15 minutes from Arundel Castle, I promptly finalized plans to visit and stay.
Both attractions are situated under two hours from London, whether by car or train. Thus, we arranged a rental and, on a radiant day, departed London for Arundel.
Trip Planning
No commendable British road trip is complete without a pause for tea. We found ourselves in a village near Arundel, whose name I struggle to properly pronounce! (I am currently trying to locate the name from a photo I captured there…)
Indeed, I confirmed that the village was named Chiddingfold, and we indulged in friendly teasing from the café owner regarding my forgetfulness.
After enjoying our tea, we resumed our journey and approximately 30 minutes later, we arrived in Arundel.
Exploring Arundel Castle
Arundel is a charming little town; however, upon our arrival, all I could consider was food! We found ourselves in an inopportune situation where most establishments had concluded their lunch service and would not begin dinner until later.
Fortunately, we discovered La Campania, an Italian restaurant that was nearly closing but welcomed us.
We dove into delightful meatballs to start, followed by carbonara for my companion and pork belly for myself.
Culinary Experience
Post-lunch, I was uncomfortably full upon our ascent to the castle, which, surprisingly, was not particularly steep! The weight of my camera reminded me of my recent indulgence.
Arriving at Arundel Castle, I was taken aback by its grandeur. Its impressive structure unfolds before you, with its outstanding preservation attributed to the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk, who have maintained the estate over generations while sharing parts of it with the public.
Final Thoughts
My exploration culminated in the gardens, where blooming flowers were a refreshing reminder of the approaching summer. I departed with joy, satisfied to have visited this remarkable historical landmark.
