When we first traveled to Thailand in the year 2000, we met an American traveler on the train to Chang Mai. He spoke of a “mystical temple in Cambodia that was completely deserted”, and how he walked around for days exploring in solitude. That temple was Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat’s days of solitude and mystery are long gone. When touring Angkor Wat today, you will be sharing it with thousands of other visitors. However, that shouldn’t deter you from experiencing this incredible ancient city. It remains a spectacular destination worth exploring.

How to Visit Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is a massive ancient city of the Khmer Empire, consisting of hundreds of temples covering 500 acres. Located just 6 km (3.7 miles) from Siem Reap, Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s top tourist attraction.

Once abandoned and looted, it is now a thriving destination, attracting approximately 2.6 million visitors each year. To fully appreciate the temples, we recommend spending a few days here, allowing you to explore at your own pace and mitigate the chaos.

To help you plan your trip, we’ve outlined some must-see temples and suggested activities in Angkor Wat.

The best way to experience Angkor Wat is by hiring a private driver. We opted for a private tuk tuk for a very reasonable rate of $25 for the day, allowing us to choose our itinerary and see the sites without the hassle of larger tour groups.

Alternatively, you can hire a private driver in an air-conditioned car for about $60 a day. There are also tour buses and hot air balloon rides available over Angkor Wat.

Temples of Angkor Wat

With more than a thousand temples to explore, each visitor has their favorite. Below are a few of the must-see temples at Angkor Wat:

1. Sunset at Phnom Bakheng

Experiencing the sunset from Phnom Bakheng (Bakheng Hill) was one of our highlights. It provides a stunning view as the sun sets over the temples, making for incredible photo opportunities.

  • Avoid the crowds – To escape the bustling crowds, consider visiting for sunrise instead; you’ll see a magical view of Angkor as the morning fog dissipates.

2. Reflection Pools of Angkor Wat Temple at Sunrise

Witnessing the sunrise at Angkor Wat is rewarding, as the reflection of the temples in the pond is breathtaking. Arrive early to claim your perfect spot, once you find it, stay put to get the best photograph!

Avoiding Crowds at Angkor Wat

If battling the sunrise crowds is not appealing, visiting from another gate can allow you to explore more temples away from the main crowd areas. Securing multiple days of access is advisable, as it enables you to see many temples without rushing for that ideal photograph.

3. Climb up to the Top of Angkor Wat

As the largest religious structure globally, Angkor Wat is a remarkable sight. Built between 1110 and 1150 by King Suryavarman II, its history and architecture are awe-inspiring. The views from the top are well worth the effort, especially when the crowds are thinner.

4. Ta Prohm

Famous from the film Tomb Raider, Ta Prohm shows the impressive interplay of nature and architecture, with roots and vines intertwined with the ancient structures.

5. Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom is notably impressive, featuring rows of statuary that flank the causeway leading up to the temple. The restoration efforts indicate the importance of preserving this historical site.

6. Bayan Temple

Scheduled for restoration, the Bayan Temple is striking for its 216 faces of Avalokiteshvara adorning its 54 stone temples.

7. Ta Som

This 12th-century temple has been overrun by a banyan tree, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

8. Preah Khan

Preah Khan offers a labyrinth of corridors that invites exploration. Like Ta Prohm, it has a jungle-like ambiance.

9. Banteay Samre

Banteay Samre is a quieter site where you can truly enjoy its architectural beauty and explore the moat and tiered walkways.

10. Banteay Srei

Known for its intricate carvings, this temple is a bit further out but well worth the visit for its exquisite artwork.

11. Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the Leper King

Notable for its elephant sculptures and intricate bas-reliefs, the Terrace of Elephants was used for royal processions.

12. Srah Srang

This ancient water reservoir is an ideal spot for sunrise, offering a serene atmosphere.

13. Pre Rup

This large complex is known for its impressive lion statues and offers stunning views from the top.

What to Wear When Visiting Angkor Wat

As with most temples in Southeast Asia, Angkor Wat has a dress code. Ensure your shoulders and knees are covered. Lightweight and breathable clothing is recommended, along with sturdy walking shoes to navigate the uneven terrain.

Best Time to Visit Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is open year-round, but the best time to explore is between November and February, during the dry season. Expect the highest number of tourists during this time. Alternatively, visiting during the shoulder season can offer better weather with fewer crowds.

How Long to Visit Angkor Wat

To fully enjoy Angkor Wat, we recommend purchasing the Angkor Pass, with options for different durations. A three-day pass is ideal, as one day doesn’t allow sufficient time to explore.

  • One-day pass costs $37 USD

For best use of your time, consider buying your pass at 5 pm, allowing access for sunset viewing that evening.
