Experience Denver’s Thriving Art and Culture Scene
Maybe it’s the thin crisp air, the amazing views, or the clean mountain water, but Denverites are an exceptionally creative bunch, making the city brimming with opportunities to indulge in your artsy side. From monthly art walks to multiple design districts and geological marvels that double as music venues, Denver offers an art scene that encourages exploration.
Denver’s Wide World of Visual Art
The Denver Art Museum (DAM) is a wonderland for art lovers, consisting of two unique buildings with fascinating architecture. The modernist Martin Building, designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti, houses the museum’s extensive collections of global and Native American art. Note that the Martin Building is currently under renovation, with phases of reopening anticipated. The Hamilton Building, designed by Daniel Libeskind, presents a more contemporary collection of art, traveling exhibits, and a wonderful hands-on artists’ studio.
For more artistic inspiration, visit the Clyfford Still Museum, which houses the complete body of work by artist Clyfford Still. As one of the founders of American Abstract Expressionism, the unique history surrounding Still’s life and works makes this museum a must-visit. Additionally, visit The Museum of Contemporary Art, known for its avant-garde exhibits in a uniquely organized space, particularly the Mixed Taste talks that promise entertaining discussions.
Denver’s Independent Art Scene
The independent art scene in Denver flourishes, with most neighborhoods showcasing an array of galleries and artist studios. Many neighborhoods host Friday Art Walks on the first Friday of every month—especially vibrant during the summer. The Santa Fe Arts District remains Denver’s original art hub, while the Golden Triangle and RiNo are quickly gaining recognition.
Explore countless galleries and don’t miss a visit to Leon, which features amazing local shows and notable collaborations.
Go on a Street Art Tour
If you’re observant while exploring the city, you’ll be amazed by the extensive public art beautifying buildings and parks across Denver. Consider taking a mural tour or search for oversized sculptures—one of our favorites is the giant blue bear. Keep an eye out for the work of local artist Jaime Molina, whose haunting faces combined with geometric patterns and colorful southwest-inspired designs epitomize Denver’s artistic spirit.
The popularity of public art led to the launch of the massive chalk art festival, held each summer in Larimer Square—a favorite event that draws large crowds, so it’s best to arrive early. Alternatively, the River North neighborhood, known as RiNo, hosts the annual Crush Walls. This art exhibit showcases the work of various artists who paint large murals throughout the district, with murals displayed for a year, allowing for easy enjoyment via a walking tour.
What’s New
The fabulously strange and interactive art installation/music venue Meow Wolf is planning its second location in Denver, scheduled to open sometime in 2021. This new exhibition promises to be a different immersive art experience from the original in Santa Fe, while still maintaining an interactive vibe. Speculation suggests that Denver’s version may incorporate virtual reality along with live performances, a concept yet to be fully unveiled.
The Best of Denver’s Performing Arts
Denver’s art scene extends beyond visual arts; the city boasts numerous venues showcasing performing arts groups and high-quality productions regularly. The Denver Performing Arts Complex stands as one of the largest performing arts centers in the U.S., playing host to the Denver Center for Performing Arts, Colorado Ballet, Colorado Symphony, and the Colorado Opera. DPAC organizes year-round performances and traveling productions across its five theaters and outdoor venue.
However, these institutions represent just a part of Denver’s vibrant performing arts culture. The contemporary ballet company Wonderbound collaborates with local musicians, the Colorado Symphony, and various creatives to offer stunning performances, including open (and free) studio rehearsals. For theatrical experiences, consider Buntport Theater Company, a small group that delivers intriguing contemporary productions in a captivating performance space.
The Music Behind Mile High City
Moreover, no exploration of Denver would be complete without acknowledging its remarkable music scene, which significantly influences the entire country’s soundscape. You cannot discuss Denver without mentioning the iconic venue Red Rocks. From Gregory Alan Isakov to Nathaniel Ratliffe and the Night Sweats, and the Lumineers, exceptionally talented acts frequently grace its stage. If you’re fortunate, you might enjoy a performance featuring your favorite artists alongside the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
If local bands, beautiful outdoor settings, and top-notch food trucks entice you, don’t miss City Park Jazz, held most Sundays from June to August—a cherished event for families and friends alike, encapsulating the essence of Denver summers.
Alternatively, for a taste of jazz history, visit the legendary El Chapultepec, which opened in 1951 and has hosted numerous iconic performers such as Ella Fitzgerald.
The Art of the Taco
While taco shops might not seem like an expected addition to this list, Denver proudly embraces taco-making as an art form. The harmonious integration of Latinx culture and hungry crowds fuels this evolving taco canvas.
For classic taco flavors, El Taco de Mexico is a family-owned staple since 1985 and deserves recognition as a top destination. For unique taco creations, consider Los Chingones. Chef Troy Guard’s “badass” (his term, not ours) cocktail and taco concept has expanded to include five locations throughout Denver. At the original RiNo site, the jalapeño popper taco paired with a T&T is a must-try.
If you seek the trendiest spot, visit Tacos, Tequila, Whisky. The City Park location previously had lines wrapping around the corner, but with two additional spots in the Highlands and Governor’s Park, procuring a spicy snack is more manageable.
Lastly, for a family-friendly experience, head to Adelita’s. With ample booth seating, attentive staff, and excellent food, you can enjoy a fish taco and margarita while kids relish quesadillas and engage in coloring. The lively atmosphere keeps the energy high, just like the kids.
