Crossing the Equator: A Journey of Discovery

Highlights of the Equator Experience

  • Stand at the highest point on the equator at Cotopaxi volcano.
  • Learn fascinating facts about the equator’s celestial significance.
  • Enjoy stunning views and unique climate experiences in Ecuador.

There is something very exciting about being at the exact center of the world. In Ecuador, you can straddle the equator and stand at the highest point on the equator at the breathtaking Cotopaxi volcano.

The equator in Ecuador is located 59 km (30 miles) south of Quito, making it a fun stop on a day trip from the city. Moreover, when you visit the equator, you have the opportunity to witness one of the highest volcanoes in the world, Cotopaxi, which reaches an impressive height of 5,798 meters (19,342 feet). This makes it the only area on the equator that experiences snow.

Despite the warmth experienced in the Galapagos Islands, the air in the Andes Mountains is notably cooler, providing a refreshing experience for all visitors.

Cotopaxi is not only a high mountain but also the most famous volcano in Ecuador worth visiting. Interestingly, nearby Cayambe is the only location on Earth where snow can be found directly on the equator, which is quite remarkable!

A Few Equator Facts

Learning About Ecuador

It is fascinating to consider how the world has been mapped. Traditionally, we view the world horizontally; however, it is more accurate to represent it vertically. This fresh perspective provides a clearer understanding of how the meridians and the equator interact.

Your perception of the equator may change dramatically after considering this insight. Historically, the equator was charted at various points across the globe, but advancements in GPS technology have now correctly positioned it in Ecuador. Our guide showcased a map with the accurate coordinates to affirm this fact.

The ancient Andean civilizations revered the sun and possessed profound knowledge of celestial bodies. They constructed ceremonial and ritual sites precisely along the equator. The location we visited serves as a magnificent giant sundial. Although the overcast sky prevented us from witnessing it in action, its grandeur was impressive regardless.

This equatorial location is optimal for scientists to study the sky symmetrically from both the northern and southern hemispheres. It raises an intriguing question: could one observe both the Southern Cross and the North Star simultaneously if they stayed until nightfall?

Experiencing the equator was an unforgettable adventure, and we took many photos to commemorate our time there. After all, it took us over a decade of travel across more than 60 countries before finally arriving at this astonishing geographical feature. It’s uncertain when we might return, so we made the most of the moment!
