After earning his BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City, Hashel returned home after immersing himself in diverse cultural experiences across Amsterdam, Haiti, Guatemala, Baltimore, and Taos, New Mexico. He now actively collaborates with local creatives, striving to construct a flourishing art community in Abu Dhabi.

Embarking on an Artistic Journey

When did your journey with art begin?

From an early age, I instinctively gravitated towards art. My childhood was filled with those formative moments of drawing and painting on walls. Over time, I transformed an extension of our house into my creative space, a sanctuary where I could express myself. Even now, I continue to have affirmations that art is my destined path.

Influences and Inspirations

How did your foundation shape your artistic identity?

Given the lack of local art programs, I pursued my education in New York City. My time at Parsons broadened my horizons, allowing me to explore various disciplines, particularly Natural Dyeing and Nature, Culture, and Design. These subjects expanded my understanding of natural pigments and inspired me to create my own paints, emphasizing sustainability and a deep connection to Mother Earth in my artistic narrative.

Upon returning to Abu Dhabi, my artistic practice evolved as I experimented with natural pigments on different surfaces, incorporating textiles into my compositions. Traditional elements like burial cloths and the architectural significance of textiles in our history have become canvases for my work.

What else did you bring back with you to Abu Dhabi?

I returned home with invaluable experiences and the strong sense of community I cultivated at school. Four years ago, I initiated a collective with local artists, prioritizing collaboration to foster idea exchange. Engaging with peers is essential for artistic growth, as it prevents isolation and encourages constructive feedback.

Where do you find creative inspiration?

Al Ain remains my anchor, deeply influencing my work. Returning to the landscapes of my childhood—particularly the majestic Jebel Hafit—fuels my creativity. The memories and family gatherings from my youth serve as profound sources of inspiration.

My work serves to micro-zoom into Al Ain, using it as a reflection of broader humanity. I aim to weave themes of movement and migration into my narrative, drawing parallels between human experiences and nature’s rhythms, making my themes both personal and universally relatable.

How would you describe the current art scene in Abu Dhabi?

The art scene in Abu Dhabi has progressed remarkably. Growing up, the cultural landscape was limited, but now it boasts institutions like the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Warehouse 421, alongside a dynamic arts center at NYU Abu Dhabi. Several new museums are set to launch, significantly expanding our cultural offerings.

Additionally, Abu Dhabi Art hosts an annual art fair, drawing both local and international participants, solidifying its place in the regional and global art community. This event is essential within the city’s vibrant artistic landscape, featuring regular shows throughout the year.

How does creativity manifest in various ways in the city?

Over the past 50 years, creativity has blossomed in the UAE. With an ongoing project developing artists’ studios and a variety of galleries, cafes, and workshops, Abu Dhabi fosters an enriching environment for artists. While some creatives prefer to work out of the spotlight, hidden gems exist for those seeking deeper engagement with local art.

Support from various organizations nurtures artists, providing a diverse range of opportunities. Unlike more saturated art scenes, Abu Dhabi allows artists to collaborate and find their space in a flourishing community, facilitating a sense of belonging and shared growth.
