How to Spend a Weekend in Bruges on a Budget
Bruges, Brugge, or however you choose to call it, is a picturesque city in northwest Belgium that is sure to please. It’s a city you can conquer in a week, a day, or even a few hours without leaving disappointed or hungry.
Getting to Bruges
At first glance, getting to Bruges may seem complicated, but there are actually many convenient ways to travel here.
- Train – We arrived via a 3.5 hour train from Amsterdam (technically four trains after three transfers) to Station Brugge, just a 15-minute walk from the city center.
- Car – If you’re arriving by car, parking is affordable at the train station for €3.50 per day, with a free transfer to the center. In the city, parking costs approximately €10/day.
- Air – If flying, take advantage of the train that leaves directly from Brussels airport, taking only one hour.
Tips to Visit Bruges on a Budget

1. Take a DIY (free) chocolate tour of Wollestraat
One of the best free activities in Bruges is to wander Wollestraat, a street lined end to end with chocolate shops. Many of them offer free samples, but the trick is to appear innocent and not as if you’re just there for the freebies.
However, if you require an excuse to buy, Confiserie Crevin allows you to use their chocolate fountain after making a purchase.
2. Grab a Waffle at Chez Albert
What is a trip to Belgium without enjoying a waffle? There are two types of waffles served in Bruges:
- Brussels waffle – Typically light, crisp, and rectangular, similar to homemade waffles.
- Liege waffles – Made with thicker batter, their consistency hints more towards cinnamon rolls with uneven edges.
The pictured waffle is a Liege waffle topped with chocolate and whipped cream for €4.50.

We purchased this at Chez Albert (next to Burg Square) and split it two ways, costing us €2.25 each in true Bruges budget style. It was the most delicious waffle I’ve ever had, excellently rich yet perfectly manageable when shared.
3. Admire the Lovely Architecture in Burg Square
After indulging in your waffle, head to Burg Square to admire the stunning Gothic Town Hall or Stadhuis, which dates back to 1376. The architectural styles in this square range from Gothic to Renaissance and Neo-Classicist.
From the square, continue your stroll through colorful alleys leading to the canal—an experience that’s both beautiful and photogenic.
4. Take the Halve Mann Brewery Tour
A tour of Brouwerij De Halve Maan Brugge lasts 45 minutes and costs €10 per person, which includes a complimentary drink of their blonde beer afterward. This family-run brewery has been operational since 1856.
During the tour, witness the blend of traditional and modern brewing techniques and see the underground pipe transporting beer to their bottling plant.
Hot Tip:
A bonus is the opportunity to ascend the brewery for a panoramic view of the city, thus saving you the €10 usually spent to go up to the top of the Belfry of Bruges.
5. Try the Traditional Flemish Stew
Trust me, if you need convincing, know this: Flemish Stew derives its rich flavor from dark beer, one of its vital ingredients. The beef is tender and flavorful, melting in your mouth. Although food in Bruges can be pricey, we managed our budget by sharing the stew and fries.
6. Head to the Pub to Taste Local Beer
Step into any pub along your path to sample local beers on tap—far superior to any beer you’ve had before. Many pubs offer flights so you can savor a variety of Bruges’ beer offerings. A popular option for beer tasting is Le Trappist, which boasts over 100 different beers; a paddle here costs around €12 for five 150ml beers.
7. Take a Canal Cruise in Bruges
One of the best ways to experience Bruges on a budget is through a canal tour. Several operators charge approximately €8 for a thirty-minute tour, which is more than sufficient.
- Fun fact: The canals do not actually connect to other locations and are closed to private boat traffic, showcasing only tour boats.
- Fun fact #2: Locals often swim in the canals during summer months.
Spending thirty minutes on the boat lets you see the city while learning its fascinating history from a knowledgeable tour guide. If traveling in colder months, consider enjoying a hot chocolate or another warm drink to keep cozy, as the boats are open air.

These suggestions allowed us to explore Bruges beautifully without overspending:
- Visit the Choco Story and Friets Museum using a combined ticket for €13, which includes discounted fries and chocolate samples.
- Consider other attractions if you want to experience more sights, like climbing the Belfry of Bruges (€10) or diving into the art scene at Groeningemuseum (€12).
