Bruges, renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage status and charming cobblestone streets, offers a unique experience for visitors. While some lament its popularity, I believe its many attractions make it well worth a visit, solidifying its status as one of the premier destinations in Belgium.
This Bruges itinerary is designed to maximize your day trip experience.
Reaching Bruges
For travelers based in Brussels, the train service provides a convenient means of access. The train station is easily navigable within the city, and I recommend embarking on your journey early to fully immerse yourself in Bruges’ offerings.
Summer is the ideal season for a visit; the warm weather enhances the beauty of blooming flowers. However, the crowds peak during this season, making the shoulder months of September and October beneficial for a more serene experience.
Exploring Bruges on Foot
Discovering Bruges is best achieved by foot. The compact city layout allows for a leisurely exploration of its many sights in just one day.
- Meander through the cobblestone lanes and uncover hidden gems, like quaint Belgian waffle shops and lesser-known museums.
- Take time to appreciate the stunning architecture of the town’s buildings.
- While wandering, I stumbled upon parks, a monastery, and even experienced a free harp concert.
A great starting point for your adventure is the market square. It buzzes with activity, providing fresh produce and local crafts every week. Just a short stroll away lies the Basilica of the Holy Blood, an exquisite basilica free to enter. Additionally, consider a horse-drawn carriage ride to take in the city from a different vantage point.
Museum of Medieval Torture
The Museum of Medieval Torture piqued my curiosity with its compelling yet unsettling exhibition. Conveniently located next to a waffle shop, it provides insight into the grim realities of past tortures inflicted upon the accused.

This museum serves as a poignant reminder of humanity’s darker chapters and the barbaric methods once used to obtain confessions. The invention of such instruments is a reflection of a grim past.

Museum of Salvador Dali
Salvador Dali stands out as one of the most captivating artists of the 20th century, known for his provocative imagery and imaginative style. His original works are displayed in a museum located right in the heart of Bruges, perfect for escaping inclement weather.

Note that this exhibition is temporary; therefore, be sure to check the website for details before your visit.
Location: Markt 7, Brugge
Hours: Open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Take a Canal Cruise
After your walking tour, I highly recommend a boat tour to view Bruges from its picturesque canals. Boats depart every half hour for a 30-minute journey showcasing the town’s remarkable medieval architecture.
The captains enhance the experience by providing insightful commentary on the history and significance of various sites, revealing nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed.

In my view, this boat tour ranks among the top activities in Bruges, regardless of its popularity. It was a highlight of my trip.
Location: Varies by boat operator, primarily at Huidenvettersplein 13, Brugge
Hours: Open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, from March 1 st to November 15 th
Enjoying Waffles in the Market Square
A trip to Belgium is incomplete without indulging in waffles. A standout option is the House of Waffles located adjacent to the Museum of Medieval Torture.
Here, you can savor a freshly made waffle topped with bananas, Belgian chocolate, and whipped cream, or any desired combination. Prices generally range from €9-10.00. Enjoy your waffle in the square, where you can people-watch and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
Visiting a Brewery
A visit to Bruges wouldn’t be complete without exploring its renowned breweries. Two notable establishments include:
Brewery Bourgogne des Flandres
This venue is ideal for enjoying a beer flight, which I highly recommend (approximately €16.00). Guests can observe the brew tanks right upon entering the courtyard, and brewery tours are available for an additional fee of around €11.

For a serene tasting experience, the brewery features a patio overlooking the canal. A fun fact: the hotel windows across the canal are crafted from crystal from Merano, Italy, which shimmer elegantly in the sunlight.
Hours: Open daily from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM
Location: Kartuizerinnenstraat 6, 8000 Brugge, Belgium
Huisbrouwerij De Halve Maan
This historic brewery hosts a unique feature—a network of underground pipes that transport beer directly from the brewing location to the tap. While I did not take the brewery tour, the 45-minute experience comes highly recommended for enthusiasts.

Minnewater Park and Tower
For some tranquility amid nature, Minnewater Park is a delightful area to explore. Its well-maintained paths along the canal are perfect for strolling or cycling.
While the tower, a popular tourist attraction, was closed during my visit for repairs, the park remains an idyllic spot for relaxation, featuring beautiful trees and benches.
Final Thoughts
Bruges is undoubtedly one of the most enchanting cities I have visited, making it perfect for a day trip from Brussels. While it may seem ambitious to fit all these activities into one day, I assure you it is feasible. I arrived early and left around 6 PM, enjoying ample time for both lunch and dinner without feeling rushed.
