A Memorable Journey Through Istanbul
Demi Perera, a London-based travel journalist, shares a snapshot of her recent trip to Istanbul, Turkey, highlighting the best experiences and culinary delights.
Having traveled to Istanbul for work several times in a previous career, I accumulated fond memories amid the bustling city life filled with meetings and dinners. At fleeting moments of respite, the vibrant backdrop of Istanbul captured my heart, remaining an unwavering impression in my memory.
Seven years later, I returned on a sunny November morning, equipped with more time and a deeper appreciation of myself and the world around me. The clear sky, mild temperatures, and the city’s busy yet warm ambiance provided a nostalgic welcoming.
Starting the Day in Istanbul
Breakfast on a yacht is a delightful way to begin the day. Although it sounds luxurious, it’s an affordable experience. Numerous operators offer picturesque cruises along the Bosphorus Strait, varying in price and duration. My enjoyable cruise provided a stunning traditional Turkish breakfast while surrounded by serene mosques, the Bosphorus Bridge, and the beautiful blue water.
Avoiding the Crowds in Istanbul
One unique way to escape the busyness is by walking on the roof of the Grand Bazaar. While one can’t bike like James Bond, walking on the roof forms part of a special tour of the Bazaar and Spice Market. It’s an unforgettable experience to take in the sights from above.
Top Spot for Lunch in Istanbul
Hünkar, located in the trendy Nişantaşı district, stands out as a must-visit restaurant. Since its establishment in 1950, Hünkar has undergone many transformations but remains a beloved spot for traditional Turkish and Ottoman dishes served from their bustling open kitchen. It’s wise to call ahead, as the restaurant tends to fill up quickly during lunch hours.
A Unique Place to Stay in Istanbul
During my stay, I chose the Shangri-La Bosphorus. A venue rich in history, this hotel was originally a tobacco warehouse in 1929, transformed into various functions, yet now sits gracefully overlooking the Bosphorus Strait. The scenic views were captivating, making it hard to leave my room at times.
I traveled to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, which provided a convenient direct flight from Heathrow. Within five hours of takeoff, I found myself marveling at the Asian continent from my hotel room window.
What to Bring Back from Istanbul
One recommended souvenir is hand-painted ceramics reflecting Turkish folk art. Within the Grand Bazaar, you can find many stalls offering these traditional pieces. I particularly enjoyed selecting some beautiful trinket dishes, each adorned with intricate patterns that date back to the 15th century.
