Explore Holland’s Tulip Fields by Bike: A Scenic Adventure

Experience the Tulip Fields of Holland

Brian Healy shares insights on the best way to relish the splendor of Holland’s tulips: on two wheels.

A Journey Through the Tulip Fields

For years, Joyce, an avid cyclist, dreamed of cycling through South Holland’s Bollenstreek, known as the “bulb region,” especially in April when the countryside blossoms with vibrant flowers.

We crafted an independent itinerary to explore this compact area by bike. We planned a four-day adventure, cycling about 20 miles each day, with comfy accommodations in two charming cities. While we both maintain a reasonably active lifestyle, the flat terrain of Holland eased any worries about covering greater distances.

I embarked on what I anticipated would be a picturesque yet somewhat touristy experience filled with iconic windmills and traditional Dutch scenes. Instead, I found an exhilarating few days of cycling, a special bonding experience, and the clarity that comes from hours spent outdoors on a bicycle. And of course, plenty of tulips filled my view.

Tulip Training for Our Adventure

After gauging our cycling skills around Amsterdam, we hopped on a 45-minute Intercity train to tulip country. Through the train’s windows, we caught glimpses of fields bursting with rows of colorful blooms.

Our first stop was Leiden—a delightful city that features 17th-century architecture, serene canals, and a slightly quieter ambiance compared to Amsterdam. Without any prior reservations, we easily rented sturdy bikes for two days from a local shop. Our goal was simple: explore the city and navigate its passages like true locals, even if our reliance on Google Maps proved otherwise.

My mother, although serious about her cycling, opted for casual clothes instead of high-end gear, reflecting our relaxed approach to this trip. Additionally, we noticed that hardly anyone wore helmets throughout our journey, a testament to the local biking culture.

Beautiful Blooms Await

The following morning, we cycled from Leiden to Lisse, a distance of about 10 miles, where we were set to visit the renowned Keukenhof Gardens. Riding on dedicated bike paths, we navigated through parks and residential areas, gradually transitioning to more industrial views. However, upon inhaling the sweet fragrance of blooming jonquils, I found my spirits lifted.

Continuing our ride, we frequently paused to stroll through the tulip fields, marveling at the stunning color-blocked patterns that made for perfect photo opportunities. The joy of cycling through the heart of tulip country was undeniable.

Exploring Keukenhof Gardens

Upon arriving at Keukenhof, we locked our bikes and entered a floral spectacle. This famous park, showcasing Holland’s tulip industry, is home to over seven million bulbs of various tulip varieties, making it one of the most breathtaking sights in the world.

We explored the gardens, entranced by the vivid arrays of tulips, including the dark-indigo “Queen of the Night.” After immersing ourselves in the beauty, we retraced our route back to scenic country roads where we indulged in the tranquility of the open fields.

Engaging with the Tulip Community

Part of the allure of our trip involved the Flower Map—a vital resource that indicated fields in full bloom. Navigating from one wondrous patch to another felt like a thrilling scavenger hunt, enhancing our sense of adventure.

Amidst the weather changes and varying cycling conditions, nothing could dampen our spirits. Riding alongside fellow cyclists of all ages fostered a sense of community—evidence that tulip enthusiasm is genuinely universal.

Experience the Flower Parade

One of the highlights was witnessing the Bloemencorso (Flower Parade), a vibrant display of grower-produced floats as they paraded through the region. My mother’s enthusiasm for the event led us to secure a prime viewing spot, where we watched in awe as intricately designed floats made from thousands of flowers showcased the artistry of the growers.

After immersing ourselves in the festivities and transitioning to our new base in the city of Haarlem, we further explored the floats that lined the streets post-parade. Seeing the wonder in children’s eyes as they gazed at the floral creations was a nostalgic reminder of the magic of floral celebrations.

Making Your Biking Adventure Happen

For an unforgettable experience, take frequent trains from Amsterdam Schiphol airport to Leiden (20 minutes) and Haarlem (30 minutes). Renting bikes in Leiden is straightforward, and it’s advisable to book in advance during peak seasons to ensure availability.

After cycling approximately 75 miles over four delightful days and witnessing the vibrant tulip fields, I offered my mom a congratulatory embrace. She expressed that the experience had far exceeded her expectations, prompting me to suggest we unwind over a long lunch filled with shared stories and laughter.

Indeed, it was a blooming fabulous escape into the heart of Holland!
