Summary
Woohoo!!! It’s (bank) holiday time – you think of spending some time in Europe and the first places that come to mind are places like: London, Rome, Paris, Barcelona and the like; however, there’s so much more to Europe than the obvious!
Granted, like everywhere else in the world, Europe also has its own fair share of dull places (not bad, just dull) but these locations will give the more known destinations a good run for their money when it comes to exploring potential holiday destinations.
Moreover, these places are not necessarily the most obvious choices for the undiscerning traveler (of which you are not!), and prices are generally lower, allowing you to comfortably indulge on a luxurious weekend escape.
1.) Nimes, France
This charming city in the South of France was a delightful surprise for me as I wasn’t sure what to expect initially. I was happily surprised by the abundance of attractions to explore.
There are numerous sights to take in alongside phenomenal restaurants offering some of the best crème brûlée I’ve ever tasted! Nimes presents a lovely, laid-back atmosphere, making it a perfect destination for a long weekend getaway.
2.) Cartagena, Spain
Discovered this gem rather randomly on a long drive in Spain, and it has since become one of my top last-minute holiday discoveries. Cartagena is filled with surprises and a plethora of charming eateries and bars ensuring you have a delightful experience during your long weekend.
3.) St Ives, United Kingdom
St Ives is so beautiful that even us Brits, who typically opt for vacations outside of the UK, choose to stay within the country for a splendid holiday. While you’re at it, be sure to try some authentic Cornish clotted cream served on scones.
4.) Gothenburg, Sweden
This smaller sibling of Stockholm, with its vibrant personality, has much to offer. The nightlife is amazing, and while some may have been surprised that I chose to visit Gothenburg over London, it stands out as one of the most intriguing Nordic cities we’ve explored, making it a noteworthy holiday destination.
5.) Palermo, Italy
Palermo oozes stunning architecture and delicious cuisine, making it an excellent destination for a quick Italian escape. While it’s referred to as a little city, the greater metropolitan area boasts over 1.2 million residents, offering a wide range of options expectant in a cultured city, while still retaining the relaxed charm of a local town.
6.) Porto, Portugal
Porto is another hidden jewel in Portugal often overshadowed by the bright lights of Lisbon. Lisbon is undoubtedly fantastic; however, Porto deserves recognition for its charm and vibrant experiences, making it an excellent place to spend a long weekend exploring.
7.) Munich, Germany
While typically regarded as the sophisticated, affluent counterpart of Berlin, Munich offers endless entertainment options for visitors. The beauty of Munich is visually captivating, so pack your camera and prepare to explore every corner of the city!
8.) Maastricht, Netherlands
Home to many EU laws, Maastricht may seem like an uninteresting location; however, its picturesque streets offer a wealth of stunning sights just waiting to be explored. Get lost in the narrow alleyways and immerse yourself in what Maastricht has to offer.
9.) Tampere, Finland
The third-largest city in Finland is quaint and charming, providing visitors with a more immersive experience into Finnish culture and lifestyles, making it a fantastic location for a relaxed weekend away.
10.) Ghent, Belgium
Ghent is an enchanting city worth visiting! Be sure to check out the Cathedral and guild houses and take a leisurely walk along the river. Don’t forget to pack your camera and friendly walking shoes for this unforgettable adventure.
11.) Tromso, Norway
Tromso is a stunning Nordic city, albeit with a more laid-back vibe. This destination makes a perfect long weekend to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life while indulging in authentic Norwegian cuisine and culture.
