Following our abundant lunch by the coast, I was hardly prepared for any strenuous activity, thus we embarked on a more leisurely excursion around Menorca – specifically, a sailing trip departing from the port of Mahon, the island’s capital.
Upon reflecting on this title, it may evoke the impression that we ventured offshore solely in pursuit of gin; however, our primary activity was exploring the island by boat. The indulgence in local gins occurred once we returned to land.
Our expedition commenced with viewing several exquisite residences (it is noteworthy that Richard Branson reportedly owned a property here at one time). Regrettably, the names of most notable residents elude my memory – likely overshadowed by the island’s stunning vistas and perhaps a food-induced reverie post-lunch.
Experiencing the island from the water offers a remarkable perspective, revealing vistas unobtainable from land, notwithstanding a drive along the coastline.
Our vessel was equipped with a glass bottom, a detail I discovered mid-excursion, prompting us to investigate to observe the underwater life that characterizes Menorca.
Before we knew it, the time had passed swiftly and we found ourselves back on land, making our way, predictably, to the gin establishment (which, regrettably, does not have the official designation).
Menorca is recognized for its production of local gins, available in various flavors, which visitors are invited to sample prior to purchasing; prepare yourself, as one may find it easy to indulge in numerous varieties. For this experience, we recommend visiting Gin Xoriguer, a brand well-regarded throughout the island (which, importantly, I had already encountered in various settings before our visit).
Gin tasting experiences are also available, yet it may be anticipated that after the seventh sample, one would not only desire gin but also feel a compelling need for it!
Our next destination was the city of Mahon, albeit with our minds slightly clouded by gin, and a surprising number of gin bottles (exclusively as souvenirs, of course) that exceeded our initial expectations! Further details to follow in the next installment.
