1. Overview of Bonaire Attractions
Bonaire has a handful of museums and cultural attractions, but most people visit this tiny Dutch Caribbean island first and foremost for its incredible diving and snorkeling. The island’s barrier reef is well-protected and recognized as one of the most vibrant and healthy ecosystems globally. Additionally, visitors are attracted to outdoor activities, such as mountain biking and landsailing.
Diving
Bonaire is not only the top dive destination in the Caribbean but also one of the best in the world. The surrounding reefs have been recognized as the healthiest in the region, earning a reputation as a “model of reef sustainability” by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
This island is the peak of a submerged volcanic mountain, with sloping reefs located just 30 feet from the shore, eliminating the need for charter boat trips to enjoy exceptional diving experiences. Underwater visibility reaches up to 100 feet year-round, and there are 86 marked dive sites, including:
- The Hilma Hooker shipwreck, an advanced dive with depths ranging from 60 to 100 feet.
- The 1,000 Steps, a great novice dive located just offshore, featuring light currents and abundant marine life.
- Captain Don’s Reef, a must-visit dive site for all skill levels.
Snorkeling
Woodwind Sailing Cruises offers guided snorkeling adventures along the edges of Klein Bonaire, a tiny island and nature preserve off Bonaire’s coast. Participants can explore the coast’s vibrant underwater life, which is often likened to a “live aquarium,” and if you’re fortunate, you may even spot a group of sea turtles!
Windsurfing
Windsurfers will find an optimal environment at Sorobon Beach, particularly for beginners. The beach conditions allow novice windsurfers to quickly learn to balance on their boards and manipulate the sails to catch the wind. The focus is less on speed at the start and more on mastering the fundamentals, making each small achievement an exciting milestone.
Kayaking
The initial segment of the kayaking route through Bonaire’s mangroves offers a captivating experience reminiscent of a Disney ride. Paddlers navigate through a natural tunnel formed by intertwining tree branches, occasionally bumping against roots on either side. While this adventure can at times feel buggy and lengthy, it ultimately rewards participants with stunning views of the surroundings.
