An epic road trip is one of America’s favorite pastimes, and few drives are more iconic than Highway 1 through Big Sur. Tight turns hug the rugged coastline while mile after mile of stunning vistas inspire awe in even the most seasoned traveler.
Planning Your Journey
It is recommended to start your drive to the north of Big Sur and head south, which keeps the vistas to the right. However, do not forget to switch up stints behind the wheel. While gawking out the window is amazing, driving this epic road is quite spectacular as well. Driving the entire 76 miles from Bixby Bridge to Hearst Castle without stopping will take about two hours. Nevertheless, making stops along the way will enhance your experience. Bixby Bridge
One of Big Sur’s most recognizable landmarks, Bixby Bridge is among the world’s highest single-span bridges. For the best photos of the bridge, stop on the south side instead of the north. A small dirt road to the right will lead you to a great vantage point, making it well worth the trip.
Point Sur Historic Park
Around six miles south of Bixby Bridge lies Point Sur State Historic Park. Although it resembles an island, it is actually connected to land by a sandbar. A historic lighthouse from 1889 sits atop the volcanic rock. Visitors can take a tour of the area with prior arrangements.
Andrew Molera State Park
Some of the best hiking in Big Sur can be enjoyed at Andrew Molera State Park, which features several scenic trails of various lengths suitable for all types of hikers. Be sure to stop by the Big Sur Discovery Center for information about the endangered California condors that are making a comeback in the region.
Pfeiffer Beach
Dip your toes into the Pacific at the crescent-shaped Pfeiffer Beach. The surf is too powerful for swimming or surfing, but this beach is a breathtaking location to watch the sheer force of the ocean. Partington Cove

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
If you’re looking for that iconic photograph of waterfalls cascading into the ocean framed by lush palm trees, make a stop at McWay Falls. The trailhead for the viewing point is conveniently located across from the parking lot for Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. This short hike offers incredible vistas and postcard-perfect photo opportunities.
Jade Cove
The tides at Jade Cove are known for washing bits of dark green or black gemstones onto the beach. The best times to search for a souvenir are during low tide or after a significant storm, but remember to take only pictures and leave only footprints. There is a beautiful bluff trail starting near the southern pullout opposite the Jade Cove sign.
Whale-spotting
Whales migrate along the Pacific Coast, heading either south to Mexico for warmer waters or north to Alaska for cooler ones. It’s possible to observe the telltale sprays from the highway, and sometimes, if you find a good spot and wait, you may catch them performing their acrobatics. Additionally, keep an eye out for dolphins, otters, and seals among the kelp.
Crossing the Finish Line
If you have the time to reach San Simeon, be sure to check out the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas before visiting Hearst Castle. You can take a guided tour of the Julia Morgan-designed estate or stop for a glass of wine at the Hearst Ranch Winery’s tasting room, Sebastian’s, which offers some food choices as well.
