Summary of Things to Do in Muscat, Oman
The Middle Eastern country of Oman is regarded as one of the safest nations globally, offering spectacular sights that range from historic castles to desert canyons and rocky mountains. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here and wished I could have explored longer, as it remains quite underrated.
Best Oman Tours
If you’re looking to explore Oman with a knowledgeable guide and private transport, I highly recommend Klook. While Oman may not be the cheapest destination, Klook offers Rustaq day tours starting from $65 USD, alongside Nizwa tours at competitive prices. These tours depart from Muscat and allow you to experience some of the best Omani castles, forts, and traditional markets.
Top Things To Do In Muscat Oman
1. Grand Canyon of Oman
Did you know that Oman has its very own grand canyon? The views from Jebel Shams are surprisingly reminiscent of its more famous counterpart in Arizona, thus justifying the name. The breathtaking scenery looking down into this canyon is truly mind-blowing.
2. Nizwa Souq
The souq (market) at Nizwa is home to an array of fascinating souvenirs, from traditional clay pots to Oman fridge magnets. Although I only spent 20-30 minutes here, I could have easily continued exploring!
3. Nizwa Fort
Situated next to the souq, the Nizwa Fort offers a comprehensive tour through its well-preserved structure, which includes storerooms, ancient weaponry, and artifacts dating back to the 17th century. It provides a fascinating glimpse into history.
4. Nakhl-Barka Fish Market
If you’re headed to Rustaq, consider stopping by the Nakhl-Barka market, a traditional fish market that showcases a diverse selection of fish for sale. This spot provides an intriguing experience.
5. An Naman Castle
Though less renowned than other forts in Oman, An Naman Castle is one of the most picturesque and recently underwent restoration, making it free to enter!
6. Al Hazm Castle
Although not as well-known, Al Hazm Castle is still a worthwhile destination. Inside, you’ll find many intriguing rooms, secret chambers, and artifacts from the 18th century, including cannons, rifles, and daggers.
7. Rustaq Fort
No visit to Oman would be complete without stopping by Rustaq Fort. As one of the country’s most iconic forts, it is certainly worth climbing to the top for a stunning panoramic view!
8. Nakhal Fort
Nakhal Fort was, without a doubt, my favorite fort in Oman. Not only is it incredibly photogenic from afar, but ascending to the rooftop offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.
9. Al Thowarah Hot Springs
Located near Nakhal Fort, the Al Thowarah hot springs are a natural delight. The springs are enjoyable, but the surrounding mountain views are equally impressive.

Where I Stayed
I opted for a stay at the 2-star Mutrah Hotel in Muscat, where I enjoyed a private room for $38 USD per night. Although Oman can be on the pricier side, this room was spacious and clean, with efficient air conditioning providing much-needed comfort.
Moreover, the location was ideal—just a short walk from the Mutrah Souq (traditional market) and other points of interest, with a mini-mart conveniently situated across the street. Do keep an eye on fluctuating prices for potential deals.
