guide to visiting June Lake, California
The eastern Sierra Mountains are not the first destination that comes to mind when considering scenic getaways. However, June Lake, a charming town nestled in these mountains, offers a wealth of attractions year-round.

Visiting June Lake just before the winter ski season, between the bustling summer and fall periods, is highly recommended. During this time, the serenity of the area is unmatched, and while many dining establishments may close, the peaceful environment is exceptionally rewarding. If fortunate, you may arrive before snow closes routes while still enjoying the excellent snowmaking facilities at Mammoth Mountain, which provides opportunities for hiking, skiing, riding, and exploring the numerous nearby hot springs.

Getting There

The most convenient airport is Reno Tahoe International Airport, although travelers should be prepared for turbulence commonly associated with this route. From the airport, head south along Route 395 until reaching the June Lake Loop, your ultimate destination. Note that a rental car is necessary as public transportation is limited, and June Lake only has one gas station.

Top Activities in June Lake During Winter

Drive the June Lake Loop

One of the highlights includes cruising the June Lake Loop, with opportunities to stop at the various lakes in the area. Silver Lake stands out as a favorite, providing stunning mountain backdrops and countless photo opportunities.

Hike to Fern Lake

The trail to Fern Lake, situated in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, offers a 3.2-mile round trip experience that is a challenging yet rewarding climb. There is a convenient parking area off the June Lake Loop, just a short 5-10 minute drive from downtown June Lake.
In early December, some snow may still be present, making certain areas icy; ensure suitable footwear.

Visit Yosemite National Park (Early Season)

Yosemite National Park is just a 12-mile drive away when the Tioga Pass remains open. However, be aware that snowfall can lead to seasonal closures of the pass, which is not maintained during winter. If you plan carefully, visiting June Lake in early October can increase your chances of accessing Yosemite.

Ski and Ride at June Mountain Ski Area

Provided the snow conditions are adequate, the June Mountain Ski Area will open, offering a more intimate alternative to Mammoth. The typical opening day is around mid-December, in contrast to Mammoth, which often opens in mid-November. June Mountain features 7 lifts, 41 trails, and 1,500 acres of skiable terrain, with a summit elevation of 10,090 feet. The area boasts an average seasonal snowfall of 250 inches, catering to various skill levels: 45% advanced, 40% intermediate, and 15% beginner terrain.

Drive to Soak in Hot Springs

The region is rich with activity! An hour’s drive north leads to Travertine and Buckeye Hot Springs in Bridgeport, or one can explore the Mammoth Lakes area, home to Hot Tub, Hilltop, and Wild Willy’s Hot Springs.
No matter your choice, you will not be disappointed; however, I recommend Buckeye Hot Springs for a unique experience.

Hike the Ridge Trail

Located just across from the fire station, the ridge trailhead offers breathtaking views of the entire June Lake area. This hike is highly recommended by locals for those looking to appreciate the scenic beauty from a higher vantage point.

Dining and Drinking Options

During the shoulder season—between Thanksgiving and Christmas—many establishments close, as residents take a break from the tourist rush. As a result, dining options may be limited in June Lake; however, Mammoth Lakes, just a 20-minute drive away, offers a plethora of choices.

Tiger Bar

This unique location is notable for being the only restaurant open between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Despite its bar food theme, the menu surprises with items like a commendable veggie burger and delectable breaded cheese curds.

June Lake Brewing Company

Among the local breweries, June Lake Brewing stands out. The quality of the beer is excellent, and the welcoming staff adds to the experience. Although food is not served on-site, patrons are encouraged to bring their meals, and food trucks are commonly present during busier months.

A general store remains open year-round, catering to various grocery needs. If you’re staying at an accommodation with a kitchen, this is an ideal stop for stocking up.

Final Thoughts

My visit to June Lake during the shoulder ski season proved to be one of the most rejuvenating vacations I have experienced. The tranquillity of the area, coupled with the warmth of the local community, was truly rewarding. Nevertheless, regardless of the time of year, June Lake presents its unique charm and beauty. For those eager for fresh powder during the shoulder season, consider exploring either Mount Bachelor or Crystal Mountain Ski Resort in the Pacific Northwest.
