2. Snorkeling, Diving, and Camping on Espiritu Santo

“The babies might try to chew on your flippers,” Eric Saucedo, our Baja Expeditions guide, warned us as we prepared to jump from our little boat off the coast of Espíritu Santo, an uninhabited island in the Sea of Cortez. Surrounded by crystal-clear water and jagged rock formations, some dotted with cacti and others with sunbathing sea lions, we couldn’t wait to dive in.

Just moments later, we were snorkeling beneath a rocky archway, quizzical sea lion pups circling us and pausing to look us straight in the eyes. Schools of colorful fish swayed in unison with the current, creating an underwater scene reminiscent of a Disney movie.

Located just about an hour by boat from La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, Espíritu Santo is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts endemic wildlife and off-the-beaten-path outdoor adventures away from the popular Cabo San Lucas resorts.

This archipelago consists of Espíritu Santo and La Partida, along with multiple islets. With so many beaches to discover, you’re likely to have one all to yourself. Baja Expeditions offers eco-tourism adventures, including scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming with whale sharks, paddle boarding, and even camping along the pristine shoreline.

Many recommend visiting in April to see vibrant marine life, including whales and dolphins. September is preferred for divers seeking warm, clear waters. Winter brings majestic humpback whales as they migrate through, while trips depart from La Paz, roughly two hours northeast of Cabo San Lucas.

3. Surf Lessons at Los Cerritos Beach

Serious surfers adore this enchanting spot on the Pacific Ocean, located 45 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas. With its clean, consistent waves and warm, inviting water, protected by an outer reef, it’s also an excellent place for beginners and surfers in training. Rent a longboard or take a lesson with the expert instructors of High Tide to perfect your skills. After your session, indulge at Barracuda Cantina, bonding with fellow surfers over delicious shrimp or fish burritos and tropical cocktails.

4. Sailing and Swimming with Cabo Adventures

Known as El Arco (“the Arch”), this iconic rock formation is a must-see when visiting Cabo San Lucas. The only way to admire its beauty is by boat. Cabo Adventures offers a plethora of activities in the area, from desert ATV rides to snorkeling and swimming. A sailing tour not only provides picturesque views but also the chance to jump into warm, crystal-clear waters. Group tours include all the necessary equipment and refreshments, or opt for the luxurious experience of a private sailing adventure.

5. Fun-filled Polaris Rides around Pescadero

Located outside Todos Santos, the quaint town of El Pescadero is where rural farms meet pristine beaches. The new El Perdido hotel provides exciting outdoor activities, including Polaris vehicle rentals for an exhilarating ride along stunning cliffside paths, although driving on the beach itself is not permitted. A ride over to Los Cerritos can launch your surfing journey.

6. Art Walks in San José del Cabo

For a leisurely outdoor experience, participate in an art walk through San José del Cabo, known for its relaxed atmosphere. Every Thursday night from November to June, the Gallery District closes to traffic, allowing visitors to engage with locals as they explore new exhibits.
