Top 9 Disney Vacation Mistakes You Must Avoid for a Magical Experience

Make your next Disney theme park vacation even more magical by avoiding these nine common travel mistakes.

Planning the perfect Disney vacation is an art form that requires equal parts pixie dust and homework. With so many choices for where to stay, what to see, and where to eat at the theme parks, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Whether you’re planning your first-ever theme park trip or you’re a veteran fan looking for some helpful tips before your next Disney World vacation, we’ve got you covered. Take your Disney experience from great to magical with these tips, ranging from money-saving hacks to essentials you won’t want to forget.

Forgetting About Reservations

Disney World and Disneyland are using a park pass reservation system to control crowd levels during the pandemic. In order to visit, a theme park reservation is required (in addition to a valid ticket). First, make sure that the parks you want to visit have reservations available, then secure your spot as soon as you buy your tickets. Additionally, don’t underestimate the value of dining reservations— with reduced capacity at many table-service restaurants, reservations are highly recommended, especially if you wish to dine at a popular eatery or enjoy a character dining experience.

Under or Overplanning

You’ll want to create a general itinerary for your trip, taking into account the preferences, ages, and abilities of your travel companions. If you’re traveling with younger children, for example, be sure to check their heights to know what they can ride. Consider the theme parks, restaurants, and experiences that are important to your group before making reservations, and then craft a game plan for each day. If you have ride enthusiasts eager to experience many attractions, arriving at the parks early or staying late will maximize your time. For first-timers, especially young kids, allow ample free time to wander the parks and perhaps book a character meal or two— a delightful experience for them. Moreover, remember to remain flexible and be open to spontaneous experiences that make a Disney vacation truly unique.

Getting Overheated or Dehydrated

Florida weather can be intense, with summer highs easily reaching the 90s, making dehydration or overheating a real concern. Therefore, be sure to hydrate regularly (it’s free at quick-service restaurants) and take some time indoors to cool off, whether in air-conditioned shops or shows. Consider investing in a cooling towel or portable fan for your comfort, although my favorite way to beat the heat is with a refreshing Dole Whip.

Not Taking a Break

Disney vacations can be exhausting. With so much magic to experience, you might feel the need to stay at the parks from opening until closing. This approach might maximize a single day, but if you’re there for several days, encourage your group to take a midday break. To make the most of ride time, head to the parks just before they open and ride as much as you can while wait times are shorter. Later in the day, when the parks are most crowded and the sun is at its peak, retreat back to your hotel to relax by the pool or even take a nap. This way, you can return to the parks refreshed and ready for more magical moments. Remember, this advice applies not just to families with young kids— even adults in their 20s should not underestimate the importance of a break during a full theme park day.

Choosing Fashion Over Comfort

Considering the Florida heat, you’ll want to dress for comfort. On hot summer days, choose light, breathable clothing and, no matter the season, prioritize comfortable footwear. Between standing in lines and walking between attractions, your feet will certainly feel the strain by day’s end, so select the comfiest shoes (ideally ones that have been broken in) for your trip.

Forgetting the Essentials

Water bottles, sunscreen, bandaids, blister pads, and portable phone chargers are essential items to pack in a fanny pack or backpack when visiting theme parks. Don’t overlook your approved face covering either— Disney currently requires these for guests ages two and older. Keeping a few extras on hand is wise, especially if you are traveling with children.

Not Checking the Schedule for Refurbishments and Special Events

Before finalizing your plans, review the calendar— park hours can change, so staying informed about any updates is crucial. Occasionally, attractions will shut temporarily for refurbishments. To avoid disappointment, check the calendar on the Disney website to see if your favorite rides will be closed during your trip. Special ticketed events, like Mickey’s Not-so-scary Halloween Party, are temporarily on hold but when they resume, confirming those operating hours will help you optimize your schedule during Magic Kingdom’s earlier closures.

Not Taking Advantage of the Free Activities

Although Disney vacations may strain your budget, the parks and hotels offer numerous free and affordable activities that guests of all ages will adore. If you’re staying at a Disney hotel, dedicate a day to enjoy the pool— many resorts feature beautifully themed pool areas that are attractions in their own right. Additionally, inquire at the front desk for complimentary events or programs you can attend. In the parks, immerse yourself in included activities like Wilderness Explorers, a set of interactive nature-themed experiences at Animal Kingdom. Furthermore, there are plenty of experiences at Disney World Resort that don’t require park tickets, such as giraffe watching at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Spending Too Much on Souvenirs

If you’re looking to save even more, consider purchasing Disney merchandise before arriving at the parks. You can find lovely, budget-friendly Disney T-shirts, accessories, and more at retailers like Target, H&M, and Uniqlo. You’ll appreciate saving some cash when it’s time to splurge on a Star Wars lightsaber or a fresh pair of Mickey ears once you arrive.
