Individuals who have visited Paris during the month of August often notice that the city does not maintain its typical atmosphere. Many locals vacate the city for the crowded beaches of the Côte d’Azur or the Atlantic Coast, resulting in Paris becoming predominantly populated by tourists from various corners of the globe. In this relaxed and festive environment, the usual metropolitan stress dissipates, transforming the City of Light into a delightful playground for tourists. Moreover, those residents who remain find relief in the diminished crowds. The enthusiasm of visitors can be contagious, prompting even the famously stoic Parisians to embrace the altered ambiance.

Why to Love the City of Light in August:

In brief, the city offers a near-private experience for you and a multitude of other visitors. Traffic on the roads nearly halts, making activities such as biking or rollerblading throughout the city especially enjoyable. Although the metro may be congested and uncomfortable, the frazzled commuters are replaced by cheerful groups of vacationers. The atmosphere may be less representative of traditional Paris culture compared to other seasons, yet, as a temporary Parisian myself, I assure you that the experience can be quite delightful. Additionally, complimentary events, including open-air cinemas, live music performances, and temporary beaches along the Seine, create a sense of having transformed Paris into a resort destination.

Visiting Paris in August also provides an exceptional opportunity to experience a cruise on the Seine or explore the city’s canals and waterways, particularly on warm days when the breezes offer refreshing relief. Enjoying a leisurely meal while afloat can provide an unforgettable experience.

A Few Highlights in August 2018:

  • Through September 2nd: Paris Plage (Paris Beach) transforms three locations across the city into a perfect space for relaxation, reading, picnicking, or leisurely strolling along temporary boardwalks. In the evenings, free concerts and the enjoyment of drinks on outdoor terraces adjacent to the Seine River become popular attractions for adults.
  • Through August 19th: The Open-Air Cinema Festival at the Parc de la Villette invites both locals and tourists to spread blankets on the modern grounds of Parc de la Villette, where approximately 40 popular and independent films are screened at no cost on a large outdoor display.
  • Through August 26th: Rock en Seine offers three full days and nights of music at the Domaine International de St Cloud, an expansive green area just beyond the western city boundary. Campgrounds are available for attendees wishing to remain for the entire duration, featuring performances by some of the most popular contemporary rock and indie acts.

How to Pack and Prepare for a Trip to Paris in August?

Rainy, muggy days in Paris are fairly common in August.

Before you finalize your travel plans and make your way to the airport or train station, ensure proper preparation with a well-organized suitcase and other necessary items. This is particularly vital during late summer when the capital’s weather can oscillate between warm, humid conditions and rain or thunderstorms. Consider the following guidelines to effectively prepare for your journey:

August in the City of Light typically experiences warm and humid conditions, with average temperatures hovering around 75 degrees F. Rain occurrences are frequent, and autumn-like weather can disrupt outdoor pursuits.

In recent years, however, notable heatwaves have impacted the region in August, with temperatures sometimes soaring to the high 90s. In 2003, for example, an intense heatwave gripped Paris in early August, resulting in a considerable number of heat-related illnesses and fatalities. Visitors who are elderly, those with preexisting medical conditions, and parents with young children should maintain vigilance regarding potential temperature surges and implement appropriate measures. Securing accommodations that include air conditioning is advisable. Additionally, ensuring an ample supply of water and maintaining hydration, even when thirst is not immediately felt, is crucial. This recommendation is particularly pertinent for older travelers who may not perceive thirst as acutely.

August can also witness unexpected rain showers, with sporadic thunderstorms being quite common. Therefore, packing a sturdy umbrella is prudent to avoid being caught off-guard during walks or picnics.

Include both closed-toe and open-toed footwear in your packing. On warm days or when visiting parks, open-toed shoes will be appreciated; however, a reliable pair of comfortable walking shoes is essential, particularly since visits to Paris often entail extensive walking—alongside navigating the challenging metro tunnels and staircases.

Don’t forget to pack a hat or visor and other sun protection for those sunny days when you wish to relax in one of Paris’ finest parks and gardens.
