Tickets for the River of Lights can be purchased starting in November from any ABQ BioPark cashier during regular garden hours or online. Group discounts are available for groups of 50 or more, making it a great opportunity for families and friends.
What to Expect
The River of Lights provides a whimsical experience during the holiday season. In addition to the mesmerizing light sculptures that you can stroll through, visitors can enjoy live carolers, an enchanting snowman display house, and even the opportunity to have Supper with Santa.
Light Sculptures
With countless attractions on display, you will undoubtedly encounter animated, 2D, 3D, and even life-sized moving lights. From cacti and yucca plants to whimsical spiders, birds, zoo animals, and trucks, the array of displays expands each year, offering even more reasons to visit.
Entertainment
Each evening features live entertainment, which may include carolers, musicians, and more. A special holiday G-scale model train runs from near the entrance to the Botanic Gardens and concludes at the Butterfly Pavilion, so keep an eye out for Snoopy Santa during your ride!
Polar Bear Express
On select weekends, the Rio Train Line offers a unique experience. Passengers board the train at the Botanic Garden/Aquarium lot. As the train meanders through the Botanic Garden, you’ll sip hot cocoa while enjoying delightful stories and festive music. Santa and his elves greet children on the train with special gifts, and after disembarking, visitors can relish in the River of Lights. Polar Bear Express tickets must be purchased online in advance, as they sell out quickly. Note that tickets are date specific and valid only for the date purchased.
Tips Before Heading Out
- Dress warmly in layers. Once the sun sets, temperatures can drop significantly, and much of the experience involves exploring outdoor gardens. Be sure to bring hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves.

- Bring along a stroller or wagon for young children, as well as a blanket to keep them warm.
- If you forget your wagon, rentals are available at the entryway.
- Wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Shark Reef Cafe, but you must present a driver’s license.
- Bicycle racks are provided at the entryway for secure bike storage.
- If you plan on taking the Polar Bear Express, allow extra time for traffic, parking, and walking to the train. Remember, the tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.
- The model trains operate from Wednesdays through Sundays from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., weather and staffing permitting. Keep an eye out for Snoopy Santa on the holiday train.
- Food options will be available for purchase throughout the gardens.
- Enjoy Holiday Nature Crafts on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the education building on December 7, 14, or 21, and create unique holiday gifts.
- The gift shops at both the Garden and Aquarium remain open during the River of Lights.
- Don’t forget your camera to capture the beautiful moments!
