Details About This Annual Holiday Parade — the Route, Getting There, and More
What is the holiday season without a parade? The city of Albuquerque’s annual Twinkle Light Parade celebrates the season with the kind of glitter and glam you expect from this holiday event. Each year, neighborhood associations, specialty groups, and clubs put together a parade entry decorated in holiday lights. Albuquerque’s entries are unique to the city, showcasing distinct artistry. Where else can you find a parade with low rider car clubs?
The parade typically takes place in Nob Hill, just two days after the annual Nob Hill Shop and Stroll. On Saturday, shopping can occur before or after the parade in Nob Hill, where merchants will remain open late. Central Avenue will be closed to vehicles from noon until midnight, allowing for a more relaxed shopping experience.
Another aspect that makes the Albuquerque Twinkle Light Parade special is the enjoyment that continues after the parade. Families can visit the Rio Grande Botanic Gardens for the special River of Lights display. Visitors can revel in the glitter and shine, with beautifully lit scenes scattered throughout the gardens. The garden railroad, adorned in festive decorations under the supervision of Santa Snoopy, particularly delights children. Moreover, Santa Claus will also be present to greet attendees.
A giant float featuring Santa and his elves will serve as the grand parade finale. This float will include a replica of the Claus home and showcase Santa’s early 1920s C-Cab Mack Truck alongside a turn-of-the-century antique sleigh. Additionally, the float will feature a corral for reindeer and a bunkhouse for the elves.
The North Pole fire department will drive an early 1930s fire truck, leading the parade. Following the Santa float, there will be an early 1930s Tangley Calliaphone Air Calliope, contributing to the festive atmosphere.
On parade day, spectators can watch along Central Avenue between Washington and Girard. While there are some bleacher stands available along the route, seating may be limited.
Preparing for the Parade
- Arrive early, as the streets become crowded quickly.
- Dress in layers or bring an extra jacket; Albuquerque’s temperatures can drop once the sun sets.
- If you have young children, consider bringing strollers or wagons. Snacks and a few dollars for small trinkets can make the experience even more enjoyable. Glow sticks are popular, so purchase them beforehand if possible.
- Plan for post-parade transportation, whether walking back to your car or using a shuttle or bus service. Be sure to factor in additional time, bring a flashlight, and consider the energy levels of your children.
