Ultimate Guide to Hiking the Presidential Traverse: Essential Preparation Tips

hiking preparations

When exploring destinations and hiking locations worldwide, I often seek out challenges that push my physical limits and test my capabilities. This pursuit led me to the Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

While my journey into nature is equally about appreciating the region’s immense beauty, the additional thrill elevates my adrenaline.

The Basics of the Presidential Traverse

What is the Presidential Traverse?

The Presidential Traverse encompasses a series of 4000-foot mountains, recognized as some of the tallest peaks in the eastern United States, located in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. The mountains are named after various U.S. Presidents: Madison (5367 ft), Adams (5774 ft), Jefferson (5712 ft), Clay (5533 ft), Washington (6288 ft), Monroe (5384 ft), Franklin (5001 ft), Eisenhower (4780 ft), Pierce (4310 ft), and Jackson (4052 ft).

The terrain is exceptionally rocky, featuring significant elevation gains and losses over a hike that predominantly occurs above the tree line, where exposure is a consideration. The traverse spans approximately 19 miles, and hikers can choose to complete it over several days or embark on a day hike to Mount Washington or neighboring peaks. Most water sources are available at AMC mountain huts and atop Mount Washington.

Where is it?

The trail can be approached from two directions: Northbound or Southbound. The Southbound route is typically recommended, allowing hikers to tackle the most demanding section with fresh legs, a strategy I endorse.

Starting Northbound commences at the Highland Center at Crawford Notch. Alternatively, Southbound hikers begin at the trailhead at the base of Mount Madison.

Solo hikers can utilize an AMC shuttle to reach the trail start, alleviating parking concerns. Although the shuttle schedule may not always align perfectly, it remains the most efficient means of accessing the Southbound trailhead when lacking transportation.

During my visit, I parked at Crawford Notch and took the shuttle, departing at 10 AM. In retrospect, starting earlier would have been advantageous, particularly for a two-day trek. I ended up bypassing several peaks, including Washington, arriving at the hut after dark.

Logistics

Where to stay

Your lodging choices depend on your hiking strategy. Completing the challenge in one long day may necessitate camping at either trail end. However, taking the journey over several days enhances the experience.

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) manages eight alpine huts along the trail, providing opportunities for hikers to enjoy accommodations and nutritious meals. Madison Spring Hut (44.328037, -71.283569), the AMC’s first high mountain hut, was originally established in 1888 and has since been rebuilt. For those hiking North to South, it is the first hut encountered at approximately the four-mile mark.

For those passing through, Madison Hut is an excellent place to refill water and check weather updates while also offering tasty pastries for a nominal fee. Note that ascending Mount Madison requires a minor backtrack from the main trail.

From the hut, trek toward Mount Adams along a relatively flat Appalachian Trail section. Caution is advised, as a trail diverges toward a challenging boulder field leading to Mount Adams’s summit.

Traveling between Mount Adams and Mount Washington allows for a straightforward Appalachian Trail route, although bypassing side trails will mean missing summit opportunities and extend your hike beyond the 19-mile mark.

Upon leaving Mount Washington, hikers continue on the Crawford Path, the oldest continuously maintained footpath in the United States, before traversing a large boulder field to reach the Lake of the Clouds Hut (44.258831, -71.318817). As the highest and most frequented AMC hut, it is a coveted destination, and an overnight stay is highly recommended.

The Mizpah Spring Hut is situated slightly off the Crawford Path, nestled between two 4,000-ft peaks. Although it is 2.6 miles from the trailhead, it features expansive south-facing windows, smaller bunkrooms, and a library for guests.

The Gear

Packing Tips

Weather along this trail is notoriously unpredictable, with some of the highest wind speeds recorded in North America. Unexpected summer snowstorms and rapid onset thunderstorms can create hazardous conditions. Therefore, preparedness is essential. Recommended packing items include:

  • Hat and mittens
  • Rain gear
  • Sun protection
  • Whistle
  • Compass and maps
  • First aid kit
  • Trekking poles
  • Phone charger, ensuring your phone is charged for emergencies
  • Headlamp
  • Tent (based on overnight lodging preference)
  • Water bottles
  • Sleeping bag
  • Good, well-broken-in shoes
  • Food

The Challenge

Training Plan

This trek poses significant challenges, with elevation gains reaching approximately 9,000 ft, coupled with rugged terrain. It is vital to approach it with a strong fitness level to mitigate risks of injury. Understanding your physical capabilities is crucial.

If you have reservations about your capacity to complete this trail, consider tackling the Franconia Ridge Loop. This 9-mile hike traverses Mount Lincoln, Mount Lafayette, and Little Haystack, providing similar challenges and enticing views within the White Mountain range. My experience on the Franconia Ridge Loop, however, involved being shrouded in a cloud near the summit, preventing me from witnessing the acclaimed vistas, though the beautiful waterfalls along the route made a lasting impression.

Hiking Itinerary

There are various approaches to tackling this trek, with options to complete the 20+ mile journey in one day or over several days. Naturally, the ultimate challenge lies in finishing the hike in a single day.

While I aimed to accomplish it in one day, I ultimately found that I was grateful for my decision to extend my journey, allowing me to soak in the spectacular scenery and experience the AMC huts, even for a short time. If I were to revisit this hike, I would aim for a schedule of two nights and three days at minimum.

Regardless of your approach, it is evident that the journey will be arduous. However, with some of the most breathtaking landscapes on the East Coast, every choice leads to an exceptional hiking experience.

Concluding Thoughts

The Presidential Traverse is celebrated as one of the most stunning hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The Franconia Notch trail is another exceptional option that can also be completed in a day. Therefore, if time is of the essence but you seek an impressive hiking experience, consider the guide to hiking the Franconia Notch.
