Top 8 Must-Do Activities in New York City

“The city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald Residing just a short 45-minute commute from New York City, I find myself visiting less often than one might expect. While this iconic city certainly has much to offer, the overwhelming crowd can be quite off-putting. However, during my recent visit, I found myself captivated by several aspects of the city and discovered a number of non-touristy attractions. Join me as we delve into the vibrant concrete jungle and explore my eight favorite experiences in New York.

1. Visit the Museums

Exploring various museums ranks among my favorite activities, with the American Museum of Natural History (Central Park West at 79th Street, New York, NY 10024-5192) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028) standing out. The American Museum is not just for children; it appeals to enthusiasts like myself! I am particularly fascinated by the evolution exhibits detailing our lineage from primates and Neanderthals, as well as the extensive displays of megafauna and dinosaurs—who doesn’t enjoy the thrill of observing dinosaur bones?

The Metropolitan Museum undoubtedly ranks as one of the premier art institutions in North America. Walking through its extensive galleries filled with diverse historical and artistic treasures is an enriching experience. Although I’ve had the pleasure of visiting masterpieces such as the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, which houses “The Birth of Venus,” The Met offers a European museum ambiance right in the heart of New York. Its unique blend of art gallery and museum creates a dynamic viewing experience. During my visit, I marveled at artifacts that evoke ancient civilizations—from hand-carved Mesopotamian scrolls to stunning pieces from Greek and Roman history. The museum also showcases breathtaking works by renowned artists including Monet, Picasso, and Van Gogh. Due to their popularity, both museums can become quite crowded, influenced by the time of year and weather conditions. Nevertheless, they are essential destinations for any visitor. Additionally, both establishments suggest a voluntary fee structure, allowing those with varying financial circumstances to appreciate these cultural treasures.

2. Experience a Show

While attending theater productions may not be a personal inclination, there are certainly a few compelling options worth considering. My initial Broadway experience was at the Phantom of the Opera, a classic that garnered fantastic discounts through the TKTS ticket booth located in Times Square. Scoring half-priced tickets was a delightful surprise, and the performance itself was profoundly moving. As a lover of classic productions, it is no wonder that my remaining interests lie in iconic shows such as Les Misérables. Recently, the announcement of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child captured my attention, although steep ticket prices currently impede my attendance.

3. Explore a Market

New York City boasts a plethora of fresh food markets, with Chelsea Market (75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011) being the most iconic. My inaugural visit occurred just before closing, allowing me to appreciate the market with minimal crowds. Returning the next day for lunch presented an entirely different atmosphere, thronged with visitors. The market’s industrial charm mixed with historic character creates an inviting ambiance.

4. Take a Stroll

During my visits to New York, I often find that wandering the city is the main highlight. For those seeking a change of scenery or a touch of greenery, I recommend exploring either the High Line or Central Park. My experience on the High Line during the last trip was enlightening; I suggest visiting in spring when the flora is in full bloom. Even in winter, the space features thought-provoking sculptures along this transformed railway path that winds through Manhattan, with connections to places like Chelsea Market. For a quintessential New York experience, walking through Central Park is essential. This urban oasis shelters numerous hidden gems, ensuring that each visit unveils something new. An impromptu coffee break on a random path or soaking up the sun on a boulder adds to the charm.

5. Support the Animals

A visit to the city wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging its notable zoos. Both the Central Park Zoo and the expansive Bronx Zoo are great places to explore. As a veterinarian, I have profound respect for the efforts these institutions undertake for wildlife conservation and education.

Common concerns regarding animals in captivity often overlook the fact that a significant portion of the collections were born within the zoo. Additionally, visitors gain invaluable insight into wildlife conservation efforts and the challenges these species face in their natural habitats. Both zoos employ dedicated veterinary staff and conservationists committed to enhancing the lives of these animals.

6. Explore Unique Bookstores

For avid readers, New York City offers a treasure trove of bookstores. On my recent visit, I endeavored to explore several used bookstores and successfully visited The Strand (828 Broadway, New York, NY 10003). With an impressive collection of 18 miles of books, this store enchanted me the moment I stepped inside—nothing compares to that old book smell. Naturally, I couldn’t resist purchasing two titles.
On my next visit, I hope to explore Rizzoli Bookstore, known for its Beauty and the Beast-like atmosphere, as well as the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, where sales contribute to HIV/AIDS research.

7. Indulge in Culinary Delights

The culinary landscape in New York City is unparalleled, offering an array of dining options that satisfy every palate. Here are a few noteworthy suggestions:

Le Pain Quotidien (703 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10017)

This farm-to-table restaurant is an excellent choice for breakfast or lunch, featuring fresh ingredients in a cozy ambiance. On my visits, I enjoyed their baked sunny-side-up eggs with salmon and dill, complemented by a prosciutto, ricotta, and fig tartine.

Coopers Craft Chelsea (169 8th Avenue, New York, NY 10011)

This bustling gastropub boasts a charming atmosphere resembling a backyard gathering. Featuring a vast selection of craft beers and delicious dishes, it’s popular among locals and visitors alike. Our shared meal included beef sliders, fish tacos, and crispy Brussels sprouts.

Xi’an Famous Foods (24 West 45th St, New York, NY 10036)

This smaller location exemplifies what it means to dine in New York—intimate and bustling. We delighted in their hand-ripped noodles served with various sauces, making for a memorable dining experience. While slurping noodles with chopsticks is no easy feat, the communal enjoyment adds to the atmosphere.

The Green Table (75 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10011)

Located within Chelsea Market, this farm-to-table establishment emphasizes fresh ingredients. Though the service is leisurely, the meals are well worth the wait. I sampled the monkfish special and the GT burger, which was distinctly flavorful due to the beef and bacon jam combination.

8. Step Back in Time

New York City is home to numerous historic speakeasies, with the renowned Campbell Apartment situated in Grand Central Station taking center stage. Originally an office for financier John W. Campbell in 1923, its ambiance maintains a sense of the Prohibition era with cocktails like the “Prohibition Punch.” Keep in mind, the venue implements a strict dress code for visitors. Other notable historic bars worth exploring include the revival of Chumley’s (86 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014), which started as a speakeasy in 1922, and McSorley’s Old Ale House (15 E 7th St, New York, NY 10003), the oldest saloon in New York dating back to 1854—where famous figures like Abraham Lincoln and John Lennon once frequented. New York City is brimming with secrets and hidden gems. Have you stumbled upon any underrated spots or delectable eateries? A well-crafted itinerary can ensure you make the most of your visit, but even with plans in hand, spontaneous discoveries are inevitable.
