Planning a vacation to Rhodes promises an extraordinary experience on this stunning island. While it offers serene relaxation under the sun, it is equally a haven for exploration. Given Rhodes’ manageable size, these day trips can be easily incorporated into your holiday itinerary, regardless of your accommodation location.

A Day Trip to Lindos and St. Paul’s Bay

Situated on Rhodes’ southern coast, Lindos is renowned for its picturesque scenery, characterized by whitewashed buildings and narrow cobbled streets, dominated by a majestic acropolis. Although a day is sufficient to appreciate Lindos, a longer stay could unveil the charm of its alleys and the allure of its rooftop bars. However, a day trip is ideal for experiencing the primary attractions alongside some beach leisure.
Top tip: Arrive early to beat the heat and opt to park at the top of St. Paul’s Bay.
Parking is available near one of the main streets leading into Lindos, close to St. Paul’s Bay. The convenience costs €5, though numerous free parking options exist if you’re willing to walk a bit. I recommend commencing your visit with a stroll up to the acropolis. Navigate through the narrow alleyways that gradually ascend. While a map might help, following the crowd and the donkeys will effectively guide your way. The ascent can be steep in sections but is manageable for those in good health. Donkeys are available for hire to aid visitors; nevertheless, I prefer to walk.
Top tip: Aim to visit early to avoid the heat and crowds; shade is scarce at the top!
Upon reaching the acropolis, a €12 entry fee allows you to explore this remarkable historical site. Much of it is undergoing restoration, yet witnessing such history is invaluable. The panoramic views overlooking Lindos’ beaches and bays are breathtaking, giving you a bird’s-eye perspective of the town.
Top tip: Some areas of the acropolis can be slippery, so proper footwear is advisable.
After exploring the acropolis, venture into the town of Lindos. Enjoy fresh orange juice, browse the shops, and stock up on refreshments for your next stop: St. Paul’s Bay. This bay features two beaches, but we opted for the left beach as viewed from the sea. Pristine and inviting, it costs €12.50 for a sunbed, which, while a bit pricey, guarantees you a comfortable spot for the day, free from overcrowding. You can even order drinks right to your sunbed, adding a touch of luxury to your holiday. We spent the afternoon relaxing, swimming, and enjoying the tranquil ambiance. The bay is also a popular departure point for boat trips, with fantastic swimming conditions, especially if you bring a snorkel mask. For lunch, a beach bar provides a shaded retreat, serving delicious salads and fresh fish—an ideal way to recharge. Conclude your day with dinner back in Lindos before returning to your accommodation!

A Day Trip to Rhodes Town

While deserving of more than a single day visit, Rhodes Town seamlessly blends historical and leisure experiences. The highlight here is the enchanting Old Town. A medieval walled city, Rhodes Old Town houses approximately 6,000 residents and is recognized as the oldest inhabited medieval city in Europe. The winding streets invite exploration, with countless hidden corners awaiting discovery. Key attractions include the Palace of The Grand Master and the Street of Knights, alongside the formidable walls of Old Town. Additionally, enjoy local delicacies while exploring the Jewish and Turkish Quarters.
Top tip: Treat yourself to ice cream from Giallo Verde Gelateria, especially their chocolate-dipped cone and delightful mango sorbet.
During your visit to Rhodes Old Town, be sure to explore the New Town as well. This cosmopolitan area features a mix of high-street and designer shops, bars, restaurants, and the stunning Elli Beach, which arcs along the northern tip of Rhodes. While we did not visit, Baia Beach Bar looked particularly promising for a beachside drink. We dined at Koutouki 42, a wonderful beachfront option offering generous portions and good value. Their Caipirinhas were excellent, and the seating arrangement provided a front-row view of a spectacular sunset. Do not miss the fried potatoes topped with feta cheese and bacon—a must-try. If sharing, order two portions, as they are irresistibly tasty.

A Day Trip to Anthony Quinn Bay

Frequently ranked among the best beaches in Rhodes, Anthony Quinn Bay truly deserves this acclaim. This south-coast gem, named after actor Anthony Quinn, features a pebbled beach and calm turquoise waters, nestled among lush, pine-covered hills. It is an ideal location for a day trip. Access the beach from the main car park by descending the steps near Kounna Beach Bar. For €6, you can rent a sunbed and spend a relaxing day listening to the gentle waves. Should you desire more activity, water sports facilities are also available.
Top tip: While steps provide the main access, a slope is also available for those with strollers or accessibility needs.
If you prefer not to pay for a sunbed, a free area is located to the right of the beach where you can spread out your towel. Facilities at Anthony Quinn Bay are minimal; however, a clean toilet block is available, along with Kounna Beach Bar, which serves lunch and dinner. We sampled their tacos, which were delightful, and the massive Greek Salad also looked inviting, ideal for sharing.
Top tip: While at Anthony Quinn Bay, consider venturing to Ladiko Bay. The dirt path between the two bays offers stunning views.
Rhodes serves as a gateway to various Greek Islands, making it an exceptional base for island hopping. For instance, Symi Island is accessible within an hour by high-speed boat and is well worth a visit. Its charming harbor, reminiscent of Italian coastal towns, definitely deserves your attention. Numerous boat trips depart from Rhodes Town, some inclusive of a swim stop at St. George’s Bay, while others provide guided tours with a visit to Panormitis Monastery. For those traveling in a group, consider renting a private boat for a leisurely day exploring beaches at your own pace.
Top tip: Extend your visit by staying a night or two on Symi Island for a deeper experience of its allure.
