Ultimate Snowboarding Guide to Mount Bachelor Ski Resort

Guide to Mount Bachelor
Mount Bachelor is often overlooked when discussing powder riding on the West Coast, but it deserves more recognition. One primary reason could be the absence of a resort at the mountain. The nearest town, Bend, is a scenic 30-minute drive away and offers excellent dining options, while Mount Bachelor features fantastic trails. Notably, the mountain attracts a substantial number of snowboarders, indicating its appeal to the snowboarding community.

While Mount Bachelor may be less talked about, its popularity spikes on weekends and holidays. Consequently, visitors should expect traffic congestion and potentially long lift lines. The mountain is also known for its windy conditions, leading to frequent wind holds on ski lifts. As a result, the summit lift is often closed, which restricts access to the top of the mountain. Despite these challenges, the terrain surrounding Mount Bachelor is abundant and enjoyable. Furthermore, the mountain boasts a lengthy ski season, typically opening in early November, although recent climate changes have posed challenges.

This beautiful drive runs through the Deschutes National Forest and passes several sno-parks, including the Virginia Meissner sno-park, which is ideal for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Mount Bachelor ranks as the sixth-largest ski area in the United States, encompassing 4,300 skiable acres.
Here’s the basic stats:
Average annual snowfall: 462 inches Number of runs: 101 Top Elevation: 9,065 feet Vertical Drop: 3,365 feet Parking is complimentary.

Trails Overview

Mount Bachelor features 15 lifts, including several magic carpets for beginners, providing access to 121 trails with various skill level designs—greens, blues, and black diamonds. The terrain includes both groomed runs and untouched areas. For those unfamiliar with deep powder, it is advisable to avoid ungroomed black diamonds at the start of the day, as such conditions can be challenging. Speaking from experience, riding on fresh powder can be vastly different from groomed trails and may impose unique physical demands on the legs.

To ease the transition into deep powder, beginners should consider starting with groomed blue-square trails or black diamond groomers, gradually exploring the edges where powder is present until they gain greater confidence.

Nordic Lodge

For those who prefer not to ski downhill, Mount Bachelor provides the Nordic Lodge, which features cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. Notably, it boasts the longest groomed Nordic season in North America, offering skiing as late as June in certain years. There are 56 kilometers of groomed trails for both classic and skate skiing, and 10 kilometers designated for snowshoeing. Rental equipment, lessons, gear purchase, and dining options are available at the Nordic Lodge. Day passes for adults are priced at $28, reduced to $22 for late-day access (after 12 PM). Multiday options include a 2-of-3 days pass at $46 per adult, or a 3-of-5 days pass at $65 per adult.

Dining Options

While dining amenities at the mountain may be limited, Bend offers a wealth of culinary choices. At Mount Bachelor, visitors can find the Pine Marten Lodge at the peak of the Pine Marten Express, featuring a cafeteria-style eatery with delicious options. Additionally, the lodge hosts sunset dinners during summer months by reservation. The main lodge at the mountain base includes a cafeteria-style restaurant, café, and pub. For a more relaxed dining experience, the pub presents a welcoming atmosphere, serving favorites like Mount Nachos and chili.
What to eat at Mount Bachelor lodge
For lunch, individuals should consider avoiding the Sunrise Lodge located at the base of the Sunrise lift. While it may seem convenient after a day of riding the trails, the menu primarily consists of deep-fried options, including a greasy veggie burger and pork sandwich. Alternatives, such as salads or sweet potato fries, are unavailable at this location. For those venturing into Bend in search of diverse dining options, The Lot food truck hub is highly recommended. It features various cuisines, a bar, and both indoor and heated outdoor seating, creating a unique experience. For further dining suggestions, please refer to my top places to eat in Bend, Oregon.

Accommodation Options

Mount Bachelor has no on-site resort; however, the nearby WorldMark Bend, located about 10 minutes away, provides an array of accommodations including condo-style rooms, hot tubs, heated outdoor pools, and even an ice-skating rink with an adjacent bar. While they offer a program for “ownership” (time share), guests can occasionally secure rooms through other sources. It can be noted that potential inquiries may lead to high-pressure pitches to buy into the program. Having experienced this myself, I found value in participating as I received a free week at any WorldMark location within the next year and a $25 gift certificate for a local brewery, making the two hours worthwhile.
Downtown Bend is an additional 10-15 minutes away, featuring various popular hotel options, often at more economical prices compared to WorldMark.
