Ultimate Winter Guide to Skiing at Palisades Tahoe Resort

Guide to Squaw Valley
Palisades Tahoe Ski Resort, formerly known as Squaw Valley and now encompassing the nearby Alpine Meadows, has swiftly become my favorite mountain destination in North America. Although it is pricey and can experience long lines, the unparalleled freedom to explore the terrain is exceptional, justifying its status as one of the premier ski resorts in the United States. For those seeking unparalleled access to diverse terrain, Palisades Tahoe is the ultimate destination.

Location and Access to Palisades Tahoe

**Address:** 1960 Squaw Valley Road, Olympic Valley, CA 96146 Palisades Tahoe is situated in the scenic Olympic Valley. The most convenient airport for access is Reno, where visitors can either rent a car or opt for the North Lake Tahoe express shuttle service ($70 each way per person). I highly recommend taking the shuttle, as it is more environmentally friendly and eliminates the need to navigate potentially hazardous winter road conditions. If traveling from California, many locals from the Bay Area frequently drive to the resort. However, please note that this journey may take several hours, with delays possible due to weather conditions and pass accessibility.

Mountain Overview

Palisades Tahoe is the largest ski resort in the Tahoe region, offering 6,000 skiable acres across its two mountains featuring some of the most renowned terrain. The resort operates from 9 AM to 4 PM, weather permitting.

  • Peak Elevation: 8,637 feet

For a seamless experience, I highly recommend utilizing the base-to-base gondola connecting Palisades with Alpine Meadows. This not only provides quick access to both mountains but also showcases breathtaking views.

As you ascend via the K2 lift on the Palisades side, you can observe expert skiers navigating the famous fingers. The gondola ride also traverses expanses of pristine wilderness owned by the National Forest Service, eventually leading to the base of Alpine Meadows. Even if skiing or riding is not on your agenda, the gondola ride itself is worthwhile; however, I highly recommend spending time at Alpine Meadows, my personal favorite of the two resorts. Palisades is part of the Ikon mountain family, and access is available with a full season pass, even the base variant. Opting for the pass is more economical than purchasing individual lift tickets, which range from $229 to $269 per day. While some packages may reduce costs, purchasing the Ikon Pass is advisable for those planning multiple days of skiing. This pass also grants access to other mountains and provides discounts at various retail locations and dining establishments. For real-time updates on trail conditions, lift lines, weather information, and open chairlifts, consider downloading the Palisades Tahoe mobile application. Although the Ikon app is useful for tracking daily experiences and accessing similar information, the Palisades app offers comprehensive updates.
Palisades base area for information
There are several parking lots at the base of Palisades and a substantial parking area available at Alpine Meadows. For those wishing to avoid driving and parking, a complimentary shuttle service operates from Truckee, Tahoe City, and other nearby locations. Consult the Palisades website for additional information regarding their new parking program. The average ski season commences in November and can extend from May to July, depending on precipitation levels. Newcomers to skiing or snowboarding will benefit from both beginner and group lessons, as well as guided tours to help familiarize themselves with the mountain. For pricing details, visit the lessons page, and remember that Ikon pass holders receive a 20% discount on lessons.

Trail Information

Palisades boasts over 170 trails, providing a wide range of terrain suitable for all skill levels. The ski area encompasses 3,600 acres with the following trail distribution:
  • Beginners: 25%
  • Intermediate: 45%
  • Advanced: 30%
Moreover, there are 16 bowls catering to expert skiers, alongside 5 terrain parks for those interested in rail riding and jumps. One of my preferred exploration areas on the Palisades side was the CII ridge to Bullet, featuring stunning winding trails and delightful snow conditions. On powder days, observe seasoned skiers showcasing their skills from the K2 lift; it is a truly captivating experience. Utilizing the aerial tram to High Camp grants access to numerous beginner trails, as well as a restaurant, museum, and hot tubs—creating a small village atmosphere. In contrast, Alpine Meadows offers over 100 trails, with a distribution of terrain as follows:
  • Beginner: 25%
  • Intermediate: 40%
  • Advanced: 35%
The mountain also features 7 bowls for expert skiers and riders.
I recommend taking the Lakeview chair on the backside of the mountain at least once while you are over there for some spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. It is a slow lift, so once is enough honestly.

Among my favorite trails are those situated on the backside of the mountain around Robin Hood and Maid Marian, where tree clusters are perfectly spaced. The front side features the Alpine Bowl and Wolverine Bowl, admired for their intricate, winding trails through trees and gullies. Dining options abound at both base areas, with outdoor seating available on pleasant days. At the base of Palisades is the Olympic Village, featuring 5-6 restaurants, a grocery store, and numerous retail shops. Dining, while delightful, can be expensive, yet one of our preferred spots, Rocker, is well worth a visit. On the Alpine Meadows side, the best dining experiences are located at the base of the mountain. A charming chalet rests midway down the mountain, nestled between several trails; however, it can become quite crowded, and the food selection is limited. The Alpine Bar, ideal for a casual beer during happy hour, often features $6 drinks compared to the typical $10-12 pricing for beers across the mountain.

Accommodation Options

Multiple lodges at the base of Palisades allow for easy access to the lifts without daily driving. A complimentary shuttle service is available from the Olympic Village Inn and other nearby lodges for those preferring to avoid a five-minute walk to the mountain. We stayed at the Olympic Village Inn, which was once home to winter Olympic competitors and has been renovated to offer rooms equipped with kitchens, living rooms, and balconies. While many rooms are part of timeshares, a selection can be booked via alternate channels. The property features several hot tubs and schedules daily activities, including non-instructional mountain tours and snowshoeing, with complimentary snowshoe rentals. Additionally, a local winery hosts a complimentary wine tasting during the week. Another budget-friendly option includes lodging in Tahoe City or Truckee, with a free shuttle service into the resort.

Nearby Activities

The Olympic Village presents a variety of activities. La Chamois and Loft Bar offer an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a classic local mountain bar, complete with comfortable couches and vintage photographs decor. On weekends, patrons can enjoy live music and refreshments in the outdoor area.

On days off, I recommend visiting Tahoe City. Free public transportation is available, allowing visitors to easily explore the small town’s charming shops and restaurants. Be sure to try Bridgetender Tavern and Grill, as their Bloody Mary is a must-have, even for those not typically fond of the drink.
There’s also some great walking trails around the town that will take you along the river or along the waterfront.

Concluding Thoughts

In my view, Palisades Tahoe stands out as one of the finest ski resorts in the country. Whether you visit to witness talented skiers tackling their craft or to explore the slopes, your experience will undoubtedly be fulfilling.
