As I reflect on my blogging journey, Italy stands out as a pivotal experience that reshaped my understanding of travel. Although it was not my first destination, it was my first international adventure, a defining moment on my journey of exploration. First Impressions of Italy
My initiation into international travel unfolded in Grado, a quaint resort town in Northeastern Italy, well-frequented by locals. Accompanying my boyfriend to a conference, we arrived early, excited for what lay ahead. Our flights separated us, with him traveling through London while I came via Paris, culminating in our reunion in Venice. Despite my anxiety over potential missed connections, we were relieved to be together in a foreign land, ready to embark on this adventure.
Upon arriving at our hotel, we soon discovered the linguistic barrier—most locals, save for one hotel staff member, spoke little English. Consequently, our initial culinary lesson was rather amusing. We stumbled upon a small pizzeria, exhausted and eager for food. The unique choice of hotdog and french fries atop a pizza slice revealed our naivety, highlighting our lack of awareness in seeking authentic local cuisine.
Lessons in Overcoming Jet Lag
The most profound awakening came the next morning. Wracked with intense jet lag, I initially struggled to grasp my surroundings as persistent knocking interrupted our sleep. My boyfriend, half-awake, opened the door to a hotel staff member, leading to a mix-up involving the word “Polizia.” In our confusion, we assumed we were in some form of trouble. Eventually, we realized she simply intended to clean our room. This experience emphasized the importance of reorienting oneself quickly to new time zones.
Exploring Grado and Beyond
Grado’s charm radiated with its serene beach, pleasant weather, and delightful food. Each morning began with cappuccinos and croissants from a local café, fueling our daily explorations of Italy. While Grado might lack major historical landmarks, it served as an excellent base to venture onward to other iconic Italian cities. However, navigating the local train station presented unforeseen challenges; a rather unpleasant restroom experience reminded me that not every destination maintains the same standards.

My time in Italy solidified critical lessons in travel preparation. Acknowledging my aversion to sleeping on flights, I learned to adapt and adjust swiftly.
