It truly is a remarkable destination to explore.
After spending time on this remarkable island, I wish to outline some of the predominant activities you can experience during your visit. To provide a diverse selection, I have incorporated a mix of beaches and historical sites.
This approach ensures you gain an authentic insight into Bermuda’s distinct atmosphere and culture. It truly is a remarkable destination for travelers.
With these considerations, explore the best experiences to partake in Bermuda during your forthcoming visit. And be careful navigating that notorious Bermuda Triangle! 😉
Wishing you an enjoyable experience.
1.) Savor a Rum Swizzle
Located in Paget Parish, Elbow Beach is an excellent destination to appreciate the island’s coastline.
Be sure to visit Mickey’s Bistro to savor one of their renowned Rum Swizzles (which are quite potent, I must note). Beware, as one too many may lead to double vision! 🤣
Truly, after a day of exploration, indulging in a drink (or two) is among the finest experiences in Bermuda.
It is essential to be aware, however, that expenses in Bermuda can be relatively high. Coming from London, a city known for its elevated prices, I observed a noticeable increase in costs.
Thus, it is prudent to budget accordingly and pace yourself with those Rum Swizzles if you aim to manage expenses.
2.) Discover the National Museum of Bermuda
Journey to the western end of the island to explore the dynamic history of Bermuda at the National Museum. The museum comprises military structures from the former Keep Fort, which now display exhibits showcasing the island’s 500-year history.
Be sure to thoroughly explore Commissioner’s House, as it represents one of the premier highlights in Bermuda for those interested in the island’s past.
After your visit, take a leisurely stroll around St George’s and admire the centuries-old Unfinished Church.
3.) Stroll through the Bermuda Botanical Gardens
Situated in Paget Parish, the Bermuda Botanical Gardens encompasses 36 acres of indigenous trees and plant life that contribute to the island’s lush greenery.
Once there, explore the glasshouses filled with orchids, inhale the fragrances wafting from the aromatic garden, or learn about the history of the gardens at the visitor center.
A piece of advice for those prone to hay fever: it may be wise to skip this location, as pollen levels can be quite high.
4.) Relax at Stunning Beaches
Located on the south coast of Bermuda is the stunningly beautiful Horseshoe Bay. In my opinion, unwinding on Horsehoe Bay ranks as one of the top activities to undertake in Bermuda. It is simply idyllic.
Renowned for its curved shape (hence its name), the bay beckons visitors with its beautiful beach featuring pink sands and azure waters.
If you wish to take a brief reprieve from beach activities, travel to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse for spectacular unimpeded views across this tropical paradise.
Afterward, consider heading to Hamilton to savor one of the finest seafood chowders on the island.
Lobster Pot
is a fantastic local establishment that should not be overlooked; make sure to arrive with a hearty appetite.
If you are eager for more beach time, consider visiting Warwick Long Bay, Sinky Bay, or Jobson’s Cove—all of which are breathtaking.
5.) Experience the Royal Naval Dockyard
Situated near the National Museum of Bermuda, the Royal Naval Dockyard was the principal base for the Royal Navy in the Western Atlantic until 1995. Presently, it serves as a docking base for vessels and features an array of restaurants and shops, showcasing local arts and crafts produced on the island. ⚓
Moreover, if you are interested in history, be sure to visit the National Museum of Bermuda as it offers a comprehensive overview of the island’s historical context.
If you’re seeking a memento to bring back, this is the ideal location to find it.
6.) Venture into Blue Hole Park
Situated just off Harrington South Road, Blue Hole Park is a remarkable area to discover blue holes, caves, and the surrounding natural environment. This undeniably ranks as one of the most captivating experiences in Bermuda.
The park connects to Tom Moore’s Jungle, making it a fantastic spot for snorkeling amidst tropical fish and exploring underwater caves. Additionally, it is an excellent area for bird enthusiasts—so pack your binoculars for the trip.
This site is a true gem for those who relish a refreshing swim! Be sure to apply ample sunscreen and heed local advice regarding sea conditions.
7.) Peruse the Crystal Cave
This subterranean, 500-meter-long cave, located near Castle Harbour, is an exciting adventure suited for those with a taste for exploration.
The cave was formed during the Ice Age, yet it remained undiscovered until the 1900s. Today, it welcomes visitors, offering guided tours through its stunning interior.
Ensure you wear appropriate footwear and prepare for the cool 72-degree temperature inside the cave.
8.) Discover Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve
Travel to St. David’s located on the island’s eastern side to explore the 12 acres of unspoiled natural beauty found at Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve.
The shallow water is perfect for lounging, while the boardwalk provides a scenic stroll through former plantation grounds filled with indigenous plants.
Since this area is legally protected, no fishing or similar activities are permitted, but birdwatching, swimming, and exploration is encouraged, making it a serene spot in Bermuda to unwind and relax.
9.) Indulge in a Dark and Stormy Cocktail
A visit to Bermuda would be incomplete without sampling this iconic cocktail.
This delightful drink is found in various regions of the island and serves as a favored choice, delivering a notable punch in terms of alcohol content. Consider yourself warned.
10.) Stroll Along Front Street in Hamilton
The capital city of Hamilton harbors the historic Front Street, celebrated as the center of activity within Hamilton.
Additionally, be sure to visit Sessions House during your time in Hamilton.
Stroll along the street, admire the vibrant buildings, dine at one of the various restaurants, and shop strategically.
It is worth noting that prices (for food and shopping) can be on the higher side here, so exercise caution in your selections.
You might be fortunate enough to encounter traditional Gombey Dancers, who typically perform during festivals as well as (occasionally) when cruise ships arrive.
For a gourmet experience, consider dining at
Mad Hatters
, which features a selection of freshly caught seafood.
11.) Visit Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
You cannot miss the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, known for being the first lighthouse constructed from cast iron.
This lighthouse stands as the taller of the two on the island, constructed in 1844. Challenge yourself to ascend the 185-foot climb to the top, followed by a refreshing tea at the Lighthouse Tearoom upon your successful ascent.
Also, do not overlook visiting Saint David’s Lighthouse, which provides further insight into the island’s historical context.
